Criteria
Wentworth Institute of Technology assembles a diverse and talented incoming class each and every year. Students seeking technology-focused careers and who appreciate the role of technology in society find their way to the Wentworth campus in the heart of Boston.

Each student applicant is unique – different backgrounds, experiences, interests, talents – as a result, Wentworth evaluates students on a wide variety of factors.

Academic achievement is evaluated based on a student's official high school transcript. Transcripts are only considered official if sent directly by the high school. The transcript is supplemented by at least one recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher. A student may submit additional recommendations if they choose (i.e. from a coach or employer).

All applicants must complete a mathematics course of study through the Algebra II (2) level. Students applying for Architecture, Computer Science, or Electromechanical Engineering must also have taken, or currently be taking, Pre-Calculus or Trigonometry. At least one laboratory science course (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics) is also required for all applicants.

All students must take either the SAT or ACT. Wentworth will look at the new SAT Reasoning Test Writing Score, including both the multiple choice and essay sub-scores, but these items will not play a direct role in the admissions decision. It is preferred that students send official scores direct from the College Board complete with the Essay Locator ID. Wentworth's College Board code is 3958.

No student is defined solely by his or her grades or performance on standardized tests. Therefore, Wentworth includes extracurricular interests in the evaluation process. Community service, athletic teams, employment, special interests, and various clubs and organizations are good examples of what makes a well-rounded student.

How to apply
Students are strongly encouraged to use an online application for admission. Access is provided to both the Wentworth Embark Application and the Common Application.

Benefits to applying online include:

• Reduced application fee ($10 for online vs. $30 for a paper application)
• Secure server transaction for credit card or electronic funds transfer (e-check) payment
• Prompt acknowledgement response
• Quicker evaluation and decision review turn-around time (paper applications require a minimum of two to three weeks for initial processing)
• Ability to track the status of an application on the Internet at any time
• Ability to track the receipt of documents required for the application file to become complete (e.g. transcripts, recommendations, or test scores)

Additional features of our online application include the ability for you to:

• Work on the application over the course of multiple sessions by logging in and out with personal user ID account and password
• Preview and print out a PDF version of the application any time before (or after) it is completed or submitted
• Upload a pre-formatted word document essay (required personal statement) and/or re-upload a newly revised version
• Register recommender(s) to receive an automated e-mail notification after the application has been submitted that will remind him/her to submit a recommendation

Application requirements
The following components must be submitted in order for an application file to be considered complete and evaluated:

• Completed Wentworth application form ( online electronic submission is the preferred method)
• Preferred enrollment term (e.g. Fall 2008) and major selected
  
• Official high school transcripts (transfer student applicants must supply a final high school transcript as well as transcripts from all other institutions of higher learning attended)
  
• Official SAT or ACT scores (standardized test scores are welcome but not required for transfer student applicants, unless within a year of high school graduation)
  
• Personal statement or essay (students may upload a pre-formatted Word document into the online application)
• Letter of recommendation from a high school guidance counselor or a teacher familiar with overall academic abilities (students may register their recommenders in the online application)
• Students who are not native English speakers must submit a TOEFL score or other recognized demonstration of English proficiency
• Please note that Precalculus/Trigonometry is a pre-requisite for students applying to Architecture, Computer Science, and Electromechanical Engineering

Optional application components
Students may also submit:

• Additional letters of recommendation (e.g. teacher, employer, coach, etc.)
  
• Wentworth does not require incoming freshmen to submit a portfolio for Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architectural Engineering Technology or Architecture. However, transfer students who wish to be evaluated for possible transfer credit in design or drawing courses need to submit a portfolio.
• Students who wish to be evaluated for AP, IB (International Baccalaureate), Test Prep, or CLEP credit, must submit an official copy of their transcript(s) and test results (if applicable) for credit evaluation

Wentworth's goal is to assist students and their families as much as possible as they move through the admissions process. Every applicant has a regional Admissions Counselor to contact with questions.

Deferred admissions
Occasionally an admitted student may wish to defer his or her enrollment for medical, personal, financial, or other reasons. If an admitted student has submitted a tuition deposit for Fall 2007, he or she may request a defer to Fall 2008 by submitting a Defer Request Form no later than two weeks prior to the start of fall classes. Students whose requests are approved will receive a new acceptance packet for the next fall semester.
