What Students Should Bring to the Residence Halls
Necessities for Living On Campus
The two lists below represent what students should be bringing to their residence hall assignments in the fall. It is highly recommended that students communicate with their roommates and/or suite mates prior to arrival to avoid duplicating items. Most students find that they send home items the first weekend after move-in because of an excess of items, so make sure to bring only what you need as you will be sharing a room with one or two other students.
What Students Should Bring to the Residence Halls
- Extra long sheets and pillowcases
- Mattress pad
- Pillows; blanket or comforter
Our beds are regular twin-sized (76" long) for the first 1-2 years, but we recommend that students purchase the extra-long sheets (80" long) since they will more than likely live in residence halls with them in their last two years at WIT.

What Students Cannot Bring to the Residence Halls
- Candles with or without the wick
- Incense or anything with an open flame
- Halogen Lamps
- Neon Signs
- Lava Lamps
- Decorative lights
- Gasoline/kerosene tanks/lighter fluid
- Open coils/Hot plates
- Space heaters
- Weapons (ex. Guns, including fake and squirt guns, knives, swords, paintball equipment, or anything that can be considered a weapon – including martial arts weapons)
- Empty Alcohol containers
- Hard alcohol
- Shot glasses
- Illegal drugs
- Drug paraphernalia (ex. pipes, rolling papers, bongs)
- Electric Blankets
- Pets other than fish, the tank cannot exceed 10 gallons
- Any construction signs/Street Signs/Barrels/Cones
- Air Conditioners
- Ping Pong, Pool or Foosball tables or large furniture
- Refrigerators larger than 4.0 cubic feet
- Any electrical equipment not UL or FM approved
Not Permitted in Evans Way/Tudbury or Baker Halls
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Toaster Ovens
- George Foreman Grills
** Alcoholic Beverages are only permitted in the registered wet apartments of Edwards, Rodgers, Louis Prang, Vancouver, 610 Huntington Avenue, and 555 Huntington Avenue. **
Health and Safety Violation
Failure to abide by the following guidelines will result in a Health and Safety Violation and may/will result in disciplinary action
- Do not overload your electrical sockets.
- Do not set- up your furniture in a way that can be a fire hazard. (consult your RD to approve all changes to room configurations)
- Maintain a clear path to all doors
- Do not cover more than 25% of your wall with posters, tapestries, etc. Nothing is allowed on or hanging from the ceiling, pipes, or sprinkler heads.
- Keep perishable food stored and covered. (WARNING: failure to do so will attract insects and rodents)
- Keep your room/suite/apartment to Wentworth's standard of clean, dispose of trash properly, and clean all dirty dishes. It is the responsibility of every suite/apartment member to keep all common areas clean.
- Keep all doors (bedroom, suite, apartment, studio, etc.) free of writing, stickers, or other things which could create damage. Memo boards may be attached to doors as long as it does not mark the door and is removed before vacating.
- Do not use duct tape on any room surfaces.
Health & Safety Inspections
The Housing Office conducts Health and Safety Inspections of the Residence Halls periodically each semester. These inspections can occur at any time and consist of a visual assessment of the rooms to check for items that are not permitted in the residence halls. If the following items are found in a room they result in an automatic $25 fine placed on the student's account: hazardous appliances (toaster ovens, electric heaters, or appliances with open coils), halogen lamps, candles, incense, and shot glasses. The room is also inspected for cleanliness and overloaded electrical sockets. Violations of this kind will be given an opportunity to be remedied and will be inspected within a week of the original inspection. Students wishing to claim individual responsibility for violations should contact their area Resident Director within 48 hours of the inspection. If this is not done, all members of the room or suite in which the violation occurred will be held responsible. Candles and shot glasses will not be returned to the students and will simply be disposed of.
