Recovery Plan

Jason Wednesday Miller, Facilities Planning and Management ’13

Co-op Employer:  Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

Co-op Position:  Engineering Dept. Co-op

Hometown:  St. Louis, MO

If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them
When Jason Wednesday Miller, BFPM ’13, moved to Boston from St. Louis as a young professional, he learned firsthand how hard it was to compete against Wentworth graduates. “Despite my six years of experience as a facilities manager at a museum, I was constantly losing jobs to Wentworth graduates who had multiple co-op experiences and a facilities planning and management degree.” Rather than lose another job opportunity, Miller decided to level the playing field by going back to school to earn an undergraduate degree from Wentworth.

Planning Ahead
At Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Miller’s co-op experience has re-affirmed his passion for this multi-discipline field. “Every day is different. Managing all aspects of a building, you may deal with various issues—architectural, electrical, plumbing, hospital codes, and LEED certification. It is never boring and there is always something to take care of.” Currently, he spends his time helping Spaulding prepare for their new 240,000-square-foot rehabilitative care and research space in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The state-of-the-art and environmentally conscious hospital is expected to be completed in December.

See The World
Miller plans to apply his classroom knowledge and co-op experiences all over the world. “Professor Richard Christiano introduced me to a U. S. Department of State recruiter. In this potential facilities management role, I would be posted at various embassies, consulates, or diplomatic properties, and traveling every two to four years. I would love to see the world while managing United States embassies in Ireland, The Netherlands, and Japan.”
