English Proficiency Requirement

All applicants for whom English is not your native language must show proof of English proficiency. The following are ways to fulfill the English proficiency requirement:

  • Obtain a score of 79 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL; or
  • Obtain a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL; or
  • Obtain an overall score of 6.5, with no subscore below 5.5 on the International English Testing System (IELTS) offered by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and the British Council; or
  • Obtain a score of 53 or higher on the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic); or
  • Study for 3 years or more at an English language-based high school (e.g. an IB school, a US high school, an American high school abroad, etc.)
  • Complete college English I and II at a United States college or university and obtain a grade of C or higher; or
  • Complete the highest level of a Wentworth recognized Intensive English Program and have the recommendation of the program director. Our preferred program is EC Boston:

Official TOEFL results must be sent directly to Wentworth from the Educational Testing Service (ETS), http://www.ets.org/toefl. The student copy is not sufficient. Wentworth's school code is 3958.

Wentworth Approved English Language Programs

These English language programs have been approved by Wentworth to take the place of TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE. Student must provide proof of completion of the appropriate level and have the recommendation of the program director. All students who choose to pursue this route in place of a TOEFL exam will need to provide a letter of recommendation from the respective center director or English teacher.

  • CELOP at Boston University – Advanced E Level (grade of 3.0 or higher)
  • EC Boston – Pre-Advanced Level
  • EF International – Level C1-1
  • ELS – Level 112
  • Embassy CES (StudyGroup) – Level 6
  • English Language Center – combined Grammar and Composition level of 1200 or greater
  • FLS International – Level 18
  • GEOS Language Institute –Level 6
  • New England School of English – Level 10 in all subject areas
  • Northeastern University American Classroom Program – Complete program
  • Stafford House (Boston Academy of English) – Level 6
  • Target International School – Level 5
  • The Language Company – Level 9 with at least an 80%
