President Pantic Speaks at BSCES Annual Meeting

Dr. Zorica Pantic was the Keynote Speaker at 158th Annual Boston Society of Civil Engineers Meeting

Boston, MA – June 12, 2006 – Wentworth President Dr. Zorica Pantic was honored as the keynote speaker at the prestigious 158th Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES) Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on June 6, 2006. More than 150 engineers and friends of engineering gathered to celebrate the achievements of the last year and to welcome new leaders to the oldest engineering society in the country, established in 1848.

Dr. Pantic’s speech, titled “Who Will (and who won’t) Be Knocking at our College Doors," examined the future of engineering in America. She talked about some of the most important issues for American and Boston engineers, including technological advancements, changes in engineering education, changing demographics, and global integration and competition.

In recent years, international students have begun to outpace American students in K-12 math education, and there has been a decline in the number of students interested in pursuing engineering as a career. As part of its commitment to the community, Wentworth is working to overcome these challenges. Last February, Dr. Pantic visited area High Schools encouraging students to pursue educations in technology fields. This spring, Wentworth hosted the 6th Annual Technology Goes Home Graduation Ceremony, a program that provides technology training to inner-city families in Boston. For the past several years Wentworth hosted the Annual MathCounts competition for Massachusetts youth, and this year offered the top performers free tuition to Wentworth.

These programs are examples of Wentworth’s commitment to academic excellence, community involvement, and economic impact. By creating relationships with organizations like BSCES, which has also facilitated several outreach activities, Wentworth has solidified itself as a leader in both the community and technical education for years to come.

Academic Excellence • Community Service • Economic Impact.
