Boston, MA – May 24, 2006 – Wentworth Institute of Technology hosted the 6th Annual Technology Goes Home graduation ceremony on May 20. Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Wentworth President Zorica Pantic welcomed the families to the ceremony held in Watson Auditorium.
“Today we not only applaud the graduates, we applaud this life-changing, innovative program," Pantic said. Technology Goes Home gives students and families from inner city Boston technology training via community-based organizations and Boston Public Schools. The Boston Digital Bridge Foundation sponsors the program.
The 6th year of Technology Goes Home saw 850 students, parents and community members graduate from the program. Roughly 600 individuals graduated from 30 public school based programs; the rest came from five community center programs.
One family from each of the 35 programs was selected as a Family of the Year. These families exemplified the transformative aspect of Technology Goes Home, showing great personal, academic or occupational growth because of the program. The Mayor awarded each family with a plaque honoring their achievement.
Just two weeks earlier, Wentworth hosted a Community Forum to discuss Mayor Menino’s plan to develop a wireless network throughout Boston. By supporting neighborhood programs like these, Wentworth demonstrates one of the core components of its mission: commitment to the community.
“As I look out at you I see the future," President Pantic said, “I see a new generation of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs. Let me encourage you all to follow your dreams, pursue your education and use the powerful tools that technology offers to expand your knowledge and access to information."
