Boston, MA – May 23, 2006 – Wentworth Institute of Technology hosted a city-wide Community Forum on May 6, to discuss Mayor Thomas Menino’s plan for developing a wireless network in Boston. The event, which was free and open to the public, was held in Watson Auditorium and was supported by dozens of local organizations and foundations.
Dr. Zorica Pantic, president of Wentworth, was the first to speak and welcomed members of the community and of Mayor Menino’s Wireless Task Force to the forum.
“It was a fantastic day and we were happy to be able host this important event," said Sandy Pascal, Associate Vice President of Community Affairs at Wentworth and member of the Wireless Task Force. The Task Force is made up of 23 members appointed by the Mayor, including professors from area colleges and various leaders from the business and technology communities.
“To date, no city the size and density of Boston has built a city-wide network," Menino said. The goal of the forum was to develop a plan for every citizen of Boston to effectively participate in the emerging world of wireless mobility. Menino hopes that city-wide wireless technology can facilitate economic development, improve city services, ameliorate the digital divide, and create a vehicle for a new form of civic engagement. The Task Force will provide their report to the Mayor on July 14.
The Wireless Community Forum provided an excellent opportunity for Wentworth to show commitment to its mission of providing academic excellence, community service, and economic impact on the region.
