Wentworth Honors Graduates of 2006

Commencement Convocation - Spring 2006

Boston, MA – May 16, 2006 – In the 102nd Year of the college, Wentworth Institute of Technology held its Spring Commencement Convocation on May 13, 2006. During a rain-soaked ceremony held under a tent on the Wentworth Quad, 112 graduates were given advice by a man who stood on the same stage 32 years ago, honorary degree recipient Howard V. Levine, AIA.

“As bad as failure feels, success feels so much better," Levine said, unexpectedly quoting from a previous commencement speech by noted sex therapist, Dr. Ruth. His speech focused on “Life after Wentworth," giving the graduates a list of ten things to remember as they embark on their own careers.

Levine, one of two honorary degree recipients, earned a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Wentworth in 1974. As the founder of Howard Levine Design Associates and Principal of Cramer Levine & Company Architects, he has made numerous contributions to architecture and design in the region and beyond. He has remained connected to Wentworth by hiring co-op students and facilitating design projects for Wentworth students within his community of Sharon, Mass. He also served as president of the Alumni Association at Wentworth where he focused on reconnecting alumni with the institute. In 2005 he was elected to the Board of Trustees and has been a member of the Wentworth Corporation since 1993.

Edward J. O’Leary, P.E., was honored with the degree of Doctor of Engineering Technology. O’Leary earned a certificate in Architectural Construction from Wentworth in 1948. A World War II veteran who achieved the rank of Major, he has always remained connected to the Institute. He founded The O’Leary Company in 1955 and in 1984, he co-founded Development Associates, where he still works today.

In keeping with the theme of “Life after Wentworth," members of the Black & Gold Society, alumni who have realized a 50-year or more anniversary of graduation from Wentworth, received Honorary Bachelor of Technology degrees. Twenty-one members of the class of 1956 marched in the ceremony.

Several students received awards for their academic achievement at Wentworth. Benjamin R. Johnson, Electromechanical Engineering, earned the Beatty Award for the overall highest academic achievement at Wentworth. Shaughn P. MacGilvray, Architecture, Benjamin H. Gorton, Electromechanical Engineering, and Jemmy Chan, Electronic Systems Engineering Technology, received the Alumni Awards for the outstanding graduates at each commencement.

The final piece of advice for the students on Levine’s list for “Life after Wentworth," was to never forget their time at Wentworth. “I hope your college experience will forever be a strong foundation in your career path, and will have played a role in who you are as a person today," Levine said, “The excellent work ethics you have learned, the quality education that you have received and the friendships you have made, will follow you throughout your life."
