Wentworth's First Ever Leadership Watch a Success

As Part of the Soar in Four Program, Students Learned from Boston Leaders

Boston, MA – May 12, 2006 – During Wentworth Institute of Technology’s first ever Leadership Watch, 10 students spent a day observing a Boston-area professional in a high-level position at work. The experience was part of the Office of Student Leadership Programs’ Soar in Four program, designed to teach leadership to students outside the classroom. “Leadership Watch is a way to see different people leading in different fields, rather than just studying the theory," said Karen Boss, Director of Student Leadership programs at Wentworth. Each student was required to contact their Boston-area professional and arrange a day, during March, to observe them at work. One student, who shadowed Ioannis Miaoulis, President and Director of the Museum of Science, got to watch as he led a meeting of more than 500 people. Another student attended the meeting between Wentworth President Zorica Pantic and the Director of the United Way in Boston. Several other prominent leaders in Boston volunteered to be a part of the program, including:

  • Jeffrey Sanchez, State Representative
  • John Carroll, Town Manager of Norwood
  • Christopher Oot , President of Camp, Dresser & McKee International, Inc.
  • Jeffrey Reade, Deputy Director of Operations at Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Plant
  • Jeraldine Martinson, Executive Director of the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston
  • Harold Wheeler, Principal Architect at Group One Partners, Inc.
  • Kimberly French, Director of Communications at the Museum of Fine Arts

“The idea was to keep it as organic as possible," Boss said. The survey completed afterwards by both the students and the professionals, showed the program to be successful. Every student said they would recommend the program to their peers. The professionals unanimously chose “exceeded expectations" when asked about the student participants’ professionalism. All but one professional said they would participate again next year and the lone exception was due to retirement. The program will be repeated again next year and will become an integral part of the Soar in Four program at Wentworth. The students who participated in Leadership Watch were: David Arruda, Shawn Garrity, Adam Palmer, Joanna Glendis, Jillian Forzese, Rebekah Whittaker, Jessica Mosman, Margeret Mazz, Alex Brown, and Melissa Brown.
