Electronic Portfolios

Two years ago, while working at East Tennessee State University, I designed and taught a new technology-intensive, capstone class for graduating seniors in the Sports Management degree program. During the design phase for this course, the department chair and I discussed alternative methods of assessment that would allow students to finish their degrees and have something electronic that would represent the work they had accomplished. We decided that since the course was designated to be a technology-intensive course, each student would be required to publish their technology related projects and other examples of their best work to the Web.

After teaching the course, many students said that this course was the most useful and practical course they had taken from the university because the projects and the technology were directly applicable to jobs for which they were applying. Some students have since written to me telling me that having their student coursework available via the web. Along with their resume and professional interests, gave them the edge they needed to win over employers and land the jobs they were most interested in obtaining.

Since then, I have been reading more and more information about the use of Electronic Portfolios for project-based assessment. Many institutions have adopted this type of assessment and some are even asking their faculty to begin developing Electronic Portfolios of the work (research, service, teaching) they accomplish.

Software developers and other companies that support and provide content management tools are beginning to integrate Electronic Portfolio components into their products. The new release of Blackboard, a course management software, has built in support for providing the necessary tools for students and faculty to create and publish their own electronic portfolios.
