Supporting My Teaching Using the Internet
I have been posting web pages for my students since 1996. For each class I teach there is a home page, with links from it to the course syllabus and laboratory assignments. There may be additional links to relevant articles and resources on the Internet. Also, whenever I do a PowerPoint presentation in class I provide a link to the slides. This way, students do not need to take notes.
I no longer distribute homework and laboratory assignments on paper. Students can always find the latest assignment as well as all previous ones by going to the course home page. Students may either print the assignments or view them on the screen. In my experience the majority of students choose not to print them, conscious of the waste of paper.
I support the open source movement (http://www.opensource.org), an international collaboration that provides free software and other materials for non-profit use. Over the years, I have benefited greatly by using open sources, particularly in the area of Unix programming. In this spirit, any materials I have provided on my web pages, including my PhD thesis and conference papers where allowed, are freely available for non-profit use. I request only that users cite the source.
