WebCT Experience at Wentworth

I started using WebCT as a course management system in fall 2005, and I am one of the users who is overwhelmingly satisfied with this learning tool.

WebCT offers many functionalities both to faculty and students. Posting lectures and assignments on the web is one of the many conveniences and very easy to use. This also reduces the amount of paper consumed for printing multiple copies for handouts. From this point of view, I would classify WebCT as a “green” e-learning system.

A first step was to create “web lectures” mainly by using Power Point presentations, and also inserting web links for videos and other internet available materials into the slides. Students are advised in advance or during the lecture that these “web lectures” are available on line. Another step was to post Assignments and Assignment Solutions on WebCT. Depending on the type of courses taught, this can be a real challenge for the instructor, mainly if the assignment involves complex drawings. Scanning existing material can be a solution that I definitely intend to use in the future.

Another step was making the students solve the assignments electronically, and submit them via WebCT. I teach two classes this fall: CCEV 205 – Construction Materials and Methods II, and CCEV 406 - Construction Project Scheduling. In both classes I had the students submit Homework and Lab Assignments electronically, and I believe that they enjoyed the process. Assignments were done using mainly Word and Excel software to write formulas and use the drawing tools. Requiring to submit assignments in these formats increased also knowledge of both software packages that students did not seem to be aware of before.

One of the drawbacks that I personally experienced with WebCT was related mainly to the students’ training in using this course management system. I had to reserve special time during the lab to train the students in opening, using, and submitting assignments via WebCT. Another drawback, not strictly related to the WebCT system but more to the human nature, was the large variety of systems of assignment submissions used by students. WebCT will not accept late assignment submissions after a certain date imposed by the instructor. This will not stop the students in trying to make late submissions via e-mail or hardcopies, which created a lot of confusion to the instructor.

In conclusion, I think that WebCT is a learning tool that will develop rapidly, and will help both instructors and students and definitely will improve the educational system.
