Creating Short Answer Questions with Several Answers Correct in Any Order

With this question type, Students enter several short answers in the form of a word or phrase. The answers can be entered in any order.

       Example: Question: Name the four inner planets. Answers can be entered in any order
Answer: Mercury, Earth, Mars, and Venus.


 

 

 

From either the Question Database, or the Assessment itself,

  • Click Create Questions.

  • Give the question a title so that you can distinguish it once it is in your question database. This Title will be visible to students unless you change the default in Assessment Settings.
  • Type in the Question text. Insert an equation if needed. You may insert an image for this question by clicking Browse.

 

  • In the Answer text text boxes, enter the answers.
  • In the Value (%) text boxes, enter the percentage value for each answer. The values must add up to a minimum of 100%.
    • To allow a correct response only if student’s answers match exactly to the answer you entered in the Answer text text box, from the Grading scheme dropdown list, select Equals.
    • To allow a correct response if student’s answers contain words, in no particular order, that you enter in the Answer text text box, from the Grading scheme dropdown list, select Contains.
    • Regular expression will allow a PERL (Practical Extraction and Report Language) regular expression to evaluate student's answers.
  • From the Allow in answer box dropdown list, select Answer 1.
  • Fill in the incorrect answers in the Answer text boxes and leave the Value (%) text boxes blank.

 

  • Click Create Additional Answers to create correct answers.

The screen updates and the Alternate text box appears.

  • From the Number of answer boxes shown to the student dropdown list, select 1.
  • From the Answer box width dropdown list, select the width, in characters, of the answer box that will display to students. You can select between 10 and 100 characters.
  • Select whether case sensitivity is a requirement.

 

More Options

In the General feedback text box, enter the text feedback. The general feedback displays when students view their graded assessment. Section Designer notes will only be visible to you.

You can preview the question before saving it by clicking Preview.
