Creating Matching Questions

With this question type, two lists are presented to Students; Students must match terms from the first list
to the second list.

Example: Match the following capitals with their countries:

           Moscow
Ottawa
London
Paris
Rome

Canada
France
Italy
England
Russia

 

From either the Question Database, or the Assessment itself,

  • Click Create Questions.

  • Give the question a title so that you can distinguish it once it is in your question database. This Title will be visible to students unless you change the default in Assessment Settings.
  • Type in the Question text. Insert an equation if needed. You may insert an image for this
    question by clicking Browse.

 


  • Select the column format for each column. The default column format is Short Answer.
  • To enter long answers in the column, click Long Answer.

The screen updates and the long answer text boxes appear.

  • In the text boxes, enter the terms to be matched.
  • To create more matched pairs, click Create Additional Pairs.
The screen updates and additional text boxes appear for Column 1 and Column 2.

 


Select a Grading scheme:

  • To set the grading scheme so that each correct match counts for a portion of the total question score, select Equally weighted.
  • If All or nothing is selected, the student must complete all matches correctly to receive full value for the question.
  • To set the grading scheme so that the value of all incorrect matches is subtracted from the value of all correct matches to arrive at the final score for the question, select Right minus wrong.

Under Column preview:

  • To preview both columns of data, in addition to displaying the first column as fields and the second column values as dropdown lists, select Preview both columns.
  • To display only the first column as fields and the second column values in dropdown lists, select Do not preview both columns.

 

More Options

In the General feedback text box, enter the text feedback. The general feedback displays when students view their graded assessment. Section Designer notes will only be visible to you.

You can preview the question before saving it by clicking Preview.
