Minor in Chemistry (CHEMM)

This minor is aimed at providing a focus for students who are interested in a Minor in Chemistry (CHEMM) to supplement their major with a stronger foundation in the chemical sciences. Students will be exposed to the foundations of chemistry and laboratory techniques, including common analytical instrumentation. They will also have the opportunity to explore a topic in a subfield of chemistry through directed research or independent study.

To earn the Minor in Chemistry, students must complete the courses (20 total credits) as outlined below. Unless noted otherwise, all courses bear 4 credits.

2 Required Core Chemistry Courses - 8 credits

  • CHEM380 Engineering Chemistry
  • CHEM390 Engineering Chemistry II

Required Organic Chemistry Course - Select one 4-credit course

  • CHEM410 Basics of Organic and Biochemistry
  • CHEM450 Organic Chemistry

Chemistry Electives - 8 credits*

  • CHEM250 Chemical Health and Safety
  • CHEM370 Independent Study in Chemistry
  • CHEM400 Environmental Chemistry
  • CHEM406 Special Topics in Chemistry

*Optionally a maximum of 8 credits may be from directed research courses (CHEM370 or CHEM406) as approved by the department chair and posted on LConnect. These courses will be easily identified by the inclusion of the words “Directed Research” in their names. Students will only be able to register upon prior approval by the academic advisor, faculty instructor and the department chair.

Dr. Paloma Valverde, Chair of the Sciences Department, will review all directed research course proposals submitted by faculty every semester. Approved projects will be offered on LConnect as CHEM370 or CHEM406 and carry between 1-4 credit hours.  Credit hours are dependent on the project and the type of research involved.
