Wentworth is committed to helping you make the best use of computers. We offer a range of computing resources including: issuing laptops to all full-time students, 5 labs equipped with the latest hardware and software; free high-speed Internet access (wired and wireless) in all residence halls and academic buildings; and a full-time Division of Technology Services. The result is a highly connected academic and social community where advanced computing is accessible and convenient.
Division of Technology Services (DTS)
DTS coordinates all information technology on campus including user support services encompassing laptop and desktop support and help desk, management information services, classroom and lab technology support, faculty training and development, networking and phone systems.
Help Desk
The Help Desk provides technology support for all students, faculty and staff. Help Desk staff are available by calling ext. 4500 from on-campus or 617-989-4500 from off-campus. Users may also email the Help Desk at: helpdesk@wit.edu or walk-in to their office on the third floor of Beatty Hall, Room 320. For more information and to view their hours of operation, please visit their website.
Network Services
Wentworth's campus network provides access to the Internet through a robust 200 Megabit fiber circuit through the Colleges of the Fenway Area Network, and all residence hall rooms are equipped with 10/100-switched Ethernet connections. Commuter students can access the network through lab computers or via ports in the cafeteria or Lower Beatty using their Wentworth laptops. Wentworth has also implemented full wireless technology in all academic and residential areas including most outdoor common areas.
Laptop Program
Wentworth will provide all first year entering students with a laptop computer outfitted with the core suite of software used in their academic programs and the ability to download software needed for their particular academic major.
Students will keep their assigned laptop as they progress through the program from year-to-year. A scheduled period to receive a new laptop and turn in the originally assigned laptop generally occurs during a student's junior year. Students in our 5-year program keep the laptop they receive as a Junior until they graduate.
The implementation of the laptop program represents a shift from our centralized model based on computer labs to a decentralized mobile computing environment that can be closely integrated with each individual's work in the studio, classroom, workshop, library, and many other areas on campus. For more information about the Laptop Program website.
Lconnect
LConnect is Wentworth's Luminis web portal that integrates with Wentworth’s administrative Banner system (LeopardWeb). It allows students, faculty and staff an entrance point to campus-wide announcements, personal announcements, e-mail, electronic calendars, institutional groups and College resources. In addition, all Wentworth Community members can download software through LConnet. LConnect can be accessed from any computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS)
Wentworth uses the Blackboard learning management system to organize and provide access to web-based course materials. Many Wentworth faculty use it as the "electronic home" for their courses and offer course materials such as handouts, online documentation, electronic assessments, discussion boards, grade book, student progress tracking, course calendars, and chat rooms. All Wentworth faculty members and students have accounts created for them automatically on Blackboard
Computer Labs
All course software is installed on personal computers in Wentworth's 5 labs, which are open seven days a week.
In addition, the Davis Center offers a true multi-media learning environment. Its faculty development and instructional presentation laboratory offers resources including high-speed Internet access, electronic imaging, 3D modeling and rendering applications, digital video editing and production, DVD authoring, CAD and sound editing. Supplementary equipment includes scanners and high-quality color printers and plotters.
Classroom Technology
The majority of Wentworth classrooms are mediated classrooms; that is they have a ceiling-mounted LCD projector and a wall-mounted screen. The Help Desk maintains an inventory of the technology in each classroom that can be viewed on the Mediated Classroom web page.
E-mail
Microsoft Exchange powers the e-mail system for Wentworth faculty, staff and students. In addition to e-mail, Exchange also provide calendars and scheduling, contacts, notes, task lists and access to public folders. It interfaces with the global e-mail address list that lists all members of the Wentworth community.
