At Wentworth, we have two primary
criteria for evaluating transfer students: academic achievement
and personal qualities.
Academic Achievement
We feel it’s critical that both high school and college transcripts
be considered when evaluating transfer students. Typically, successful
applicants have grade point averages of C+ to B+ or better. However, we
are aware that many students choose to transfer because of problems they
have experienced at another school – problems
that may have affected their grades. Others may have met our
requirements based on high school achievements, but then chose colleges
that weren’t right for them. Still others may not have been ready for
Wentworth after high school but have since focused their interests at
another college. Whatever your reasons for transferring, we’ll use the
most complete information possible to make admissions decisions and take
your particular situation into account.
Personal Qualities
Personal qualities are reflected in the information in your
completed application – including your
personal statement or essay and at least one recommendation letter.
We’re looking for students with a career oriented focus and who are
motivated to succeed in their chosen field of architecture, computer
science, design, engineering, engineering technology, environmental science, or management. In
addition, we’re seeking students with an understanding of how a
Wentworth program will help them reach their individual goals.
The Admissions Process
Wentworth practices rolling admissions, which means we review each
application as soon as we receive all of its components. Transfer applicants
wishing to be considered for fall 2008 must apply no later that June 1,
2008. Please check with the Admissions Office for space availability in
the area of your interest. Since some majors and on-campus housing fill
up quickly, we encourage you to apply early.
A complete transfer application includes the following requirements:
- The application form and $30 application fee. We
strongly encourage online applications. Advantages to applying online
include a reduced fee of only $10 for you and a more timely response
to and review of your application by us.
- Personal statement or essay.
- Recommendation (from a professor or other
professional familiar with your academic abilities).
- Final official high school transcript.
- Official college transcripts (photocopies and faxes
are not considered official) from all other institutions of higher
learning you have attended.
- TOEFL score (or other documentation of English
proficiency, see information for
International applicants for details,) if your native language is
not English.
- Official scores of either the SAT or ACT (this is only a requirement for transfer students who are within a year of high school graduation).
Optional application components for transfer applicants include:
- Additional letters of recommendation.
- SAT or ACT scores. (Please note that SAT or ACT scores are only optional to transfer students who graduated from high school over a year ago. Transfer students within a year of high school graduation are required to submit official scores of either the SAT or ACT.)
How we evaluate transfer credits
We know your ability to transfer credits can play a critical role in
your decision to attend Wentworth. Therefore, we streamline the
evaluation process as much as possible.
Once you have submitted your application (with descriptions for each
college course), we review every course to determine its applicability
to the program for which you are applying. Credits will be transferred
only for courses with a grade of C or better. Generally, we evaluate
classes based on their available catalog descriptions.
Students planning to major in Industrial or Interior Design who have
taken similar course work at other institutions must submit a portfolio
of their work for review by the Department of Design and Facilities for
consideration of transfer credit. Students should contact the department
directly to schedule the review. Students majoring in Architecture must complete all architectural courses at
Wentworth.
Transfer applicants should also note that many of our
majors have required sequences
of courses that must be taken within the Wentworth departmental program.
If you have questions about the required course of study for any of our
majors, please review the
Wentworth catalog carefully and/or contact the appropriate academic
department directly.
Once you have sent all the official transcripts with your application
(and course descriptions if requested), we will send you an evaluation
of your transfer credits and a list of courses you need to take at
Wentworth – usually within three weeks following your acceptance letter.
