| Professional interior designers use
artistic principles, technology, and an awareness of regulations to
shape aesthetically appealing and functional interior environments.
As a student in our interior design program, you'll use creative
and critical thinking skills to design commercial offices, hotels,
health care facilities, restaurants, retail environments, and
residential interiors. Our program provides a solid foundation in
design, design theory, materials, and building technologies, as well as
a balanced study of aesthetic and functional issues and is accredited by
the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research. (See
www.fider.org for information about
FIDER accreditation.)
Your studies will begin with a Foundation Year of Design and Drawing classes, which are taken by every student majoring in any of the three Department of Design & Facilities programs (which include Interior Design, Industrial Design, and Facilities Planning & Management.) You will be encouraged to explore and expand your skills to prepare you for the rigor of your first studio classes in your Sophomore year. The Department is one of the few academic units in the United States that has dedicated studio space for sophomores as well as the juniors and seniors.
Under the guidance of experienced faculty, you
will apply classroom knowledge to challenging projects in our design
studios. You will also be required to successfully complete two co-op
work semesters beginning junior year.

As a graduate you may seek work with an interior or
architectural design firm, a private corporation, or the government.
After two years of work experience, you can sit for the NCIDQ
examination for professional certification.
