Computer Network and Information Systems, B.S. degree

Computer networking and information systems professionals manage networks and database management systems, and implement creative technical solutions for businesses.

As a student of computer network and information systems, you will learn to apply technology to the needs of modern business. Studies include key introductory programming languages (including object-oriented programming), as well as systems architecture, software testing and operating systems. You'll also gain experience in web design and development. In addition, a specialized networking lab will help you develop skills in network installation, administration and operation. Related courses such as software design, database management systems, system analysis, and information technology are also offered. You are required to successfully complete two co-op work semesters beginning junior year.

As a graduate you'll be qualified to work in areas such as network administration, database administration, web application development, web design, technical support, and IT management.

Q: What's the difference between the computer network and information systems major, and the computer science major?

A: Computer network and information systems focuses less on software development and more on support and administration. With a heavier emphasis on advanced mathematics and physics, the computer science major is for students interested in learning intensive systems design and high-level programming.
