David Blittersdorf grew up in Pittsford, Vermont fascinated with wind and solar energy. He received an associate’s degree in Mechanical Design Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1977, and earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Vermont in 1981. The following year, he founded NRG Systems (recently renamed Renewable NRG Systems), and over the next 22 years developed it into a global leader in wind measurement technology, simultaneously gaining a deep familiarity with the wind resource of his native state.
In 2004, Blittersdorf established his second company, AllEarth Renewables, which designs and manufactures the AllSun Tracker — a grid-tied solar PV tracking system. In addition to running AllEarth, he volunteers his time to organizations connected with renewable energy, education, and preparing for a post-peak-oil world. He served as treasurer of the American Wind Energy Association for 16 years until the spring of 2010, and subsequently was a founding member and treasurer of the Distributed Wind Energy Association. He currently serves as a board member for Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR), Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, the Energy Co-op of Vermont, and the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas—USA. He is a current board member, founding member and past chair of Renewable Energy Vermont. David is also on the board of advisors for the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the SUNY-Canton Engineering School, the Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Within the past three years, Blittersdorf has led two separate Vermont partnerships in building a large-scale solar farm (the 2.1 MW South Burlington Solar Farm, completed in June 2011) and a large-scale wind farm (Georgia Mountain Community Wind, a 10 MW, four-turbine farm on the Georgia-Milton town border in northwestern Vermont, completed in December 2012). Additionally, Blittersdorf was elected to the Wentworth Corporation in 2013 with his current term expiring in 2018. In his spare time, he enjoys hang-gliding and ice hockey.
