Accelerate Named '50 on Fire’ Finalist
Accelerate, Wentworth Innovation + Entrepreneurship Center was launched in the summer of 2012 and was most recently nominated as a 2013 finalist in the education category for BostInno’s 50 on Fire event.
According to Caroline Lyle from Streetwise Media "being 'on fire' is a combination of the concrete and the intangible. It's proven growth, public accolades, and hard metrics [working hard] mixed with creativity, bravery, and presence. The best way to put it is [finalists] are changing Boston for the better in ways which simply can't be ignored."
The high level of energy and buzz that Accelerate has created on campus and in Boston’s innovation economy in a short period of time has elevated the awareness of Wentworth in the innovation and entrepreneurship space. From the initial student start-up competition to the launch of a Social Innovation Lab and the College Think Tank program, ACCELERATE is experiencing a tremendous amount of momentum and passion by students. The demand for participating in the student start-up challenge has grown over each of the four iterations of the program. For example, in the 2012-2013 academic year, which represents three iterations of the challenge, 85 student ideas were submitted as compared to the 52 ideas that have already been received for the fall 2013 semester. In addition, there has been a growing interest in the program from alumni and industry professionals, and there are now 13 faculty members serving as program ambassadors, participating in programming and promoting its value.
Out of 2,000 nominees across ten categories at the 50 on Fire event, 16 finalists were chosen in the education category. Accelerate was one such group alongside the MIT Media Lab, Harvard's iLab, Harvard Business School, Northeastern's IDEA, and Olin College among others. Members of Accelerate would also like to congratulate their colleagues from MIT, Harvard, Berklee, and Olin for making the top five.
