What: 2011 Colloquium, Educating Our Students for the Future
When: Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at 9:15 a.m.
Where: Wentworth Institute of Technology, Beatty Hall, Room 426
Information: The objective of the 2011 Colloquium is to examine the ways in which faculty members educate Wentworth students and the role they play in developing students’ commitment to and understanding of notions like civic engagement, community participation, creative expression, and moral and ethical values.
The keynote address titled Sustainable Futures will be given by Trustee Wayne C. Johnson, a widely recognized thought leader and global influencer. Johnson will review trends, developments, and global realities from the perspective of the private sector, drawing on his extensive executive experience in both the aerospace and information technology industries and his direct involvement in global partnerships with the world’s leading universities, development banks, and non-governmental organizations. His presentation will provide a framework for thinking about the future of education and what must be done to ensure graduates are prepared for lifelong learning in careers that combine professional challenge, mastery, and purpose.
Facilitators will lead breakout sessions in discussions of the following questions:
* What are the major changes/trends/challenges facing the United States and the rest of the world in the next 10-15 years?
* What are the personal attributes—knowledge, skills, and attitudes—that our students should have upon graduation to meet the challenges of the next 10-15 years?
* What will the curriculums—the general education and discipline specific components—look like in order to achieve these personal attributes?
* What are some possible next steps at the program, department, college, and institute levels?
* How will we know that we have achieved our goals?
The 2011 Colloquium is sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Faculty Senate. For more information, please contact Karen Britton, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, at 617-989-4472 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
