Library Orientations for Freshmen are now available online on our
Orientation
Website. More advanced library instruction sessions
are available upon faculty request. These advanced instruction sessions
must be connected to a research project/paper -- no general overview
classes will be held.
Advanced Bibliographic Instruction
These sessions are generally the length of the class period and
help students with a specific research paper/project for the class.
Some of the topics we cover are:
- Boolean Search Strategies - Basic and Advanced
- Comparing Search Engines - Which one should you use?
- Web Page Evaluation - How to tell if a web page is a
good resource for research.
- MLA style (or any other citation style)
- Creating Works Cited Pages and Parenthetical Documentation
- Annotated Bibliographies
- Searching the Fenway Libraries Online Catalog
- Specific Databases - Tips and Tricks
- Print Resources - What can't be found online
- Navigating the Print Reference Collection - What type
of reference work will answer the question?
- Presentation Skills - Focuses on voice and body
language, how to prepare, and how to get rid of nerves.
You may use our online
form to
submit requests or contact Rachel Zyirek at
zyirekr@wit.edu
Please submit requests at least one week prior to class date.
Information Literacy Programs
Information Literacy, briefly defined, means having the ability to:
- Define an information need
- Understand the different kinds of sources available and
choose those that fit your need.
- Search your sources effectively using advanced searching
techniques
- Evaluate results from your sources
- Use the information correctly understanding citation
standards and copyright and plagiarism issues.
This is not something that can be taught in a one-shot,
bibliographic instruction session. We can work with your
department to create a plan to visit your students on a schedule
that will address their research needs and allow us to teach
them information literacy skills they can use throughout their
lives.
If your department would like to set up an information literacy
program, please contact Rachel Zyirek at
zyirekr@wit.edu.
