LConnect

How do I open my library account?
To open an account you need to bring your WIT ID to the Circulation Desk and fill out a registration form.  The library staff will then create your account. This will allow you to check out books from our library as well as from the other libraries in the Fenway Library Consortium.  You will also be able to access our databases from off campus.

How can I see what I have checked out in the online catalog?
Once you are in the FLO catalog, click the "My Account" button, login using your WIT ID barcode (13 digits), PIN (fenway1) and your last name.

How do I renew my books?
You may renew your books in the FLO catalog after logging into "My Account".  You may also call the Circulation Desk at 617-989-4040 (menu #2).  Books may be renewed for 28 days.

Where do I return materials?
The library has two book drops.  One is outside the library door and the second is at the Circulation desk.  The book drop outside the library door is available whenever the building is open.

How do I find/use reserve materials
To find an item that is on reserve for your classes, use the Course Reserves tab in the library catalog.  Here you can search by instructor, department, or course.  The search feature utilizes pull down lists of instructors, etc.  All the Wentworth entries have WIT as a prefix.  For example: Professor Hasso will be listed as WIT-Hasso, Mark.  The list is alphabetical so the Wentworth entries are near the end.

Some materials are on permanent reserve and not linked to a class.  These materials will also have the location of Wentworth Circ Desk in the FLO catalog.

Once you know what you need, you can request the item at the Circulation Desk. You need your Wentworth ID to use reserve materials.  We hold your ID until you return the material.

Can I place a hold on a book?
Yes, this will ensure that the book will be held aside for you after it has been returned.  Just call our Circulation Desk or stop by to place the Hold.  You may also place a Hold directly in the FLO catalog using the "Place Request" feature.  You will be notified by email or phone when it is ready to be picked up.

Can I recall books?
Contact the Circulation Desk and ask.  They will make an attempt to recall the book for you if it is possible.

How do I borrow a book from a FLO library?
You can place your request for a book from a FLO library (Emerson, Emmanuel, Lesley, MassArt, Mass Pharmacy, MFA School, New England Conservatory, and Wheelock) using the "Place Request" feature in the library catalog.  You will be prompted to login to "My Account".  It can take anywhere from 3 days to a week to arrive.

How do I check the status of my requests?
Login to "My Account" in the FLO catalog.

How do I borrow a book from a FLC library?
First check at the Circulation Desk to be sure your WIT account is up to date and you have a current validation sticker on your WIT ID.  Materials may be borrowed from most libraries upon presentation of a valid ID card from a member institution. Borrowers are responsible for returning items in accordance with the regulations of the individual libraries. Contact the individual libraries for hours of operation and additional information.
Here is a list of FLC libraries.

Where can I return books borrowed from FLO and COF libraries?
You may return your books to our Circulation desk and we will send them to the lending library.

How do I know which libraries I can borrow from?
With your WIT ID you can borrow from any of the Fenway Library Consortium (FLC) members.  The FLC includes all the FLO and COF libraries.  The complete list with links to the catalogs is found at

RESEARCH ASSISTANCE

How do I access library resources when I am off-campus?
You may access the FLO catalog without any password.  Databases do require a current LConnect account to access them from off-campus. Use your current email address and password when prompted.

How do I choose a research topic?

Choosing a research topic is not as easy as it seems.  First you need to consider your professor’s requirements especially length, format, and scope.  You need much more information for a ten-page paper versus a three-page paper.  Next, try to find a topic that interests you.  Finding a topic that you want to learn about makes research, reading and writing the paper much easier!  It may help to browse a general or subject encyclopedia, a journal in the field, or a periodical index. Research is not a one-time event.

It might help to look for keywords and synonyms.

At this point try few searches in the library catalog and online indexes to see how much information is out there.  You might need to try different words and synonyms.  This will help refine your topic.  If your topic is too broad or narrow you will have trouble.  With a topic that is too broad, you will find too much information and waste time reading information you do not need.  If you topic is too narrow, you will not find enough information.

How do I find a journal, magazine or newspaper article?
Our periodical indexes are all online.  Go to the
Databases by Subject page and choose which subject best fits your topic.  Then you will have a list of resources that will say whether they contain journal article citations or full-text articles.  If you find a citation without a full-text link, check the FLO catalog or our print guide to see if we own the journal title in print.  If we don't, you may request it through Interlibrary loan.

How do I find out if the library owns a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper article?
We have a database called
TDnet that has a list of all our journal titles that are in print and full-text in databases.  It will tell you what years we own and if it's full-text online, which database has it.

How do I cite my sources?
Please see the MLA handout for guidance.
