When will my laptop refresh occur, and how should I prepare for the refresh?
As a Junior, your laptop refresh will happen on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, from 1 to 5:30PM in the Tansey Gymnasium. You will return your T60p or G4 Powerbook laptop and receive a new T61p or MacBook Pro (respectively) at this time. If you do not have your laptop refreshed on September 2, 2008, the next opportunity to do so will be on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the OIT Help Desk, Room 320, Beatty Hall, from 9:00AM to 4:00PM.
If you do not turn in your old laptop and pick up your new laptop on Tuesday, September 9th, your Student Account will be charged a $100 Late Fee. After September 9th, in order to turn in your old laptop and pick up your new laptop you will need to bring a $100 Late Fee “Paid Receipt” from the Student Service Center to the OIT Help Desk.
Before you come to refresh your laptop, you must do the following:
- Back up your data!
OIT will not be able to assist you in backing up your data on the day of the refresh. You must have all of your data backed up before you come.
Note: The laptop you are returning will be reimaged and your data files will be irretrievable. Instructions for backing up your data can be found at the links below:
- Do not attempt to remove any stickers from the laptop.
- Verify you have all the parts you need to return.
The laptop needs to come back to OIT with the power adapter, battery and all internal components.
- Be aware of possible charges for broken/missing parts.
The following is a list of prices that will be charged for broken/missing parts (if applicable, the charge will appear on your tuition account):
- Minor dents and scratches – No Charge
- Missing battery - $130
- Missing AC Adapter - $80
- Missing RAM - $100 per 1GB chip.
- Cracked LCD Display - $400
- Severe Case Damage (causing the machine or a component to be inoperable) - $400
The Day of the Refresh
The refresh process will involve an inspection of your old machine, “checking in” your old laptop, assigning a new laptop, and then doing the initial set-up of your new laptop.
Be sure to bring the following to the refresh:
- Your Student ID (No laptops can be distributed without a Student ID),
- Your old laptop
- The required accessories (of your old laptop)
You can always contact the OIT helpdesk at 617-989-4500 if you have questions.

Can I keep my laptop?
After you graduate from the four- or five-year program you are enrolled in, you will be able to keep the laptop at no additional cost to you. Certain Institute licensed software will remain on the laptop after you graduate. If you leave Wentworth before completing your program, you will be required to return the laptop to the Helpdesk. If you do not return it, you will be billed a fee equal to the cost of the computer system as stipulated in the Laptop Program Student Agreement..
What are the costs for this program?
The cost of the laptop program is part of your tuition. There are no
additional fees, except in cases where damage which is not covered under the
manufacturer's warranty has occurred to your laptop, or your laptop was lost or stolen.
Can I apply for additional financial aid to cover the cost of my computer?
Yes. A family can apply for a Federal Parent Plus Loan or alternative loans for computer-related expenses. A family may also participate in a payment plan to cover tuition and fees incurred. Please consult with a Student Service Center staff member for further details.
How do I obtain support for my Wentworth laptop?
All users of Wentworth laptops will receive comprehensive support for their laptop from the OIT Helpdesk located on the third floor of Beatty Hall, room 320, ext. 4500, or from published help on the OIT Website. Support includes:
- Diagnosis and repair of software applications used in the student's program.
- Insurance for protection in the event of theft or accidental damage.
- Arrangement for warranty repair if required.
Wentworth will provide support services (including repairs, loaner machines, and software upgrades) for only those computers that are distributed through Wentworth's laptop program.
If my machine is broken and is being repaired, are loaner systems available?
Yes. If you have a problem with your Wentworth laptop, you will need to contact the Helpdesk for a service appointment. A technician will conduct the initial troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repairs. If the problem is hardware-related or if it requires warranty or insurance related repair, the Helpdesk will arrange for these repairs to be made. If the problem with the laptop is determined to be accidental damage to your unit and the issue is covered by insurance, you will be assessed a $250 insurance deductible fee on your tuition bill. You will be responsible for any costs associated with repairs or replacements that are not covered under insurance or manufacturer's warranty. If it is necessary for your laptop to be sent away for repair, a temporary replacement computer will be provided for you.
In the event that a laptop suffers major damage resulting in the loss of data, Wentworth is not responsible for the lost data. Students are required to back up any files that they deem important. We recommend that you invest in a “flash” drive for this purpose. Failure to back up your data may result in a loss of your work.
If your technical issues are found to be the result of changes to the configuration you have made, conflicts with additional software you have installed, or other adjustments you have made to customize your system, you will be required to reinstall the original software suite and settings to return the system to its approved generic state. You may also have to reimburse Wentworth for any costs it may incur to reinstall the original software.
What if I change majors at Wentworth?
If your new major requires a different laptop model or software image than your original major, you may need to exchange your laptop or have your existing laptop re-imaged at the Helpdesk. The Helpdesk is located on the third floor of Beatty Hall.
What happens if I leave Wentworth prior to graduation?
You are required to return the laptop to the Helpdesk if you leave Wentworth. If you do not return it, you will be billed a fee equal to the cost of the computer system as stipulated in the Laptop Program Student Agreement.
What if my laptop is lost or stolen?
The computer is solely the responsibility of the student. Laptops are small and thus easily stolen. The owner of the laptop will be responsible for paying the $500 deductible if the need to file a claim arises. If you lose your laptop for a second time under this program, you will be responsible for paying the Wentworth replacement cost of another laptop.
If your laptop is stolen you should contact the Office of Public Safety immediately to complete an Incident Report. You should keep a copy of the Incident Report for your records. Responsibility for reporting laptop theft or vandalism lies with the student.
After filing the necessary Incident Report, you should notify the Helpdesk to receive further replacement instructions. A copy of the official police Report must be supplied to the Helpdesk before insurance claims can be processed.
Note: for insurance claims, you should be able to provide proof that you took reasonable precautions to safeguard your computer. The laptop should never be left unattended. If you must leave your laptop for an extended period of time or overnight, it should be securely locked in a safe place. It is highly recommended that you take your laptop computer with you if you are leaving a studio or other workspace.
Do I need to bring a printer, scanner and/or digital camera?
You are not required to buy any of these items. You will find both a scanner and a digital camera to be valuable tools to have available if you are a student in one of the following majors: Architecture, Architectural Engineering Technology, Interior Design, Industrial Design, or Facilities Planning and Management. Printers and scanners are available in designated areas around campus. Most manufacturers of printers, scanners, and digital cameras configure their products to work on either platform (MAC or PC), but it is important to make sure of this before purchasing. If you wish to purchase additional peripherals: click IBM or Apple Sales Desk.
Which laptop software will remain on the laptops after graduation?
All software on the laptops are allowed to remain on the laptop upon graduation. Students do not receive updates or upgrades, if they wish to update or upgrade and in some cases continue using the software they would have to purchase a license or upgrade on their own. Certain software which WIT holds site licenses for will not work if once the students have left WIT.
Whom can I contact with questions?
Additional questions can be directed to laptop@wit.edu.
