About Civil Engineering Technology

Students study to become productive members of design and construction teams. As they learn engineering theory and its practical application to design, they gain valuable technical skills, which include surveying, laboratory and field testing, and applying computers to analysis, drafting, and design. Graduates can choose from a variety of careers with the state or federal government, local municipalities, construction or engineering firms, and architecture/surveying companies.

What made you decide to start designing clothing?

I've always been interested in photography and I needed an outlet to display my work. I started designing t-shirts, inspired by both my photography and New England sports teams. Once I found a concept I liked, I began designing stickers, belts, fliers, and-ultimately-the website for my company, Boston Cream. I launched the website about two months ago and so far it's been very well-received.

After looking at other clothing companies, I tried to figure out what I could do to be different. I wanted a product that locals could relate to. So I figured why not design sports-themed and city-themed shirts-something everyone around here would understand.

How has Wentworth facilitated your entrepreneurial goals?

Being in classes at Wentworth definitely gives you a feel for the real world. With the laboratories and the co-op, you get to see what it's like once you graduate and that's definitely helped out a lot.

What do you like best about civil engineering?

Recently I've been very interested in green design. My co-op job last semester was working as the assistant sustainability coordinator at Wentworth's physical plant. I became familiar with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system, in which buildings are rated based on the amount of energy saved and light emitted. The world is changing, the climate is changing, and we have to do something about it.
