Co-op Experience: Audrey Emerson
"I know that my co-ops have opened many doors for me."
Interior Design (BINT) ’10
Co-op Employer: Bridgewater State College
Position: Facilities Management and Planning Intern
Taking the Initiative
Audrey Emerson, BINT ’10, transferred to Wentworth to challenge herself with a rigorous interior design program. She applied the same mindset to finding and executing successful co-op positions.
“My persistence and initiative got me the job and allowed me to be successful.”
Learning by Doing
As an intern with the Facilities Management and Planning Office at Bridgewater State College, Emerson created floor plans, participated in project meetings with her supervisors and architects, attended department meetings, worked on specifications, and visited project sites. She applied her knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) and VectorWorks to create accurate design plans to accompany the project scopes, which allowed for more successful execution and completion of projects. Over time, Emerson was given the chance to work independently on larger projects. As a result, she made decisions on her own and gained confidence in her abilities.
“I learned a lot about project management during this co-op—something that cannot really be learned in the classroom and will benefit me greatly in the future.”
Emerson’s time at Bridgewater State College taught her a lot about the business side of interior design and the challenges of implementing a project, aspects of the profession she was not yet familiar with. She even had the opportunity to see her projects come to fruition.
After experiencing many different facets of interior design, Emerson feels that her decision to attend Wentworth and pursue her passion has been reinforced. Without her co-op experiences, she may not have had the opportunity to realize how many options would be open to her with a degree in interior design.
“I feel more confident in my career options, having several internships on my resume and knowing that I could be happy in a variety of fields related to interior design. I know that my co-ops have opened many doors for me.”
