Where is the office located? When is it open? Is there always someone on duty?
The Public Safety Office is located on the first floor of 610 Huntington Avenue. The department is in operation 24 hours a day- seven days a week. Police Officers and Dispatchers are on duty at all times. We encourage all our students to visit the Department of Public Safety so they become familiar with our staff. The Wentworth Police Department currently has a total of 13 certified Massachusetts Special State Police Officers. Each officer has attended a police academy and are certified Law Enforcement Officers. All officers maintain certification on a yearly basis. All officers attend special in-service training in areas such as, firearms, CPR and First Responders, (EMT) Emergency Medical Technician and other safety and community related training. A supervisor is assigned to each shift.

Is the area around campus safe?
We do consider the campus and areas around the campus to be a safe, however, incidents do occur. We encourage our students and WIT community to be alert at all times and report suspicious persons and situations to the Campus Police by calling X4444 or by activating any of the yellow call boxes throughout the campus.

Do you teach students how to be safe in Boston?
At the beginning of each school year Public Safety conducts a Safety and Security Presentation to all first year students entitled How To Be Safe In Boston. This presentation is also made available throughout the academic school year to all other students. Public Safety also works closely with the Office of Housing and Residential life to offer programs on safety, self-defense classes, and property identification services.

Is there a mechanism for information to get out to students about any safety issues that arise?
Wentworth Public Safety does publish an annual report disclosing campus security policies and three years worth of selected crime statistics. This information can be obtained by visiting the Public Safety Office. Wentworth makes timely warnings to the campus community about crimes that pose an ongoing threat to students and employees. This is made available on LConnect, distribution of leaflets and posters to residential halls and articles and police log submitted to the school paper.

Can anyone get into my student’s residence hall?
All resident halls on campus area are secured 24/7 and are equipped with electronic card access readers. Only students residing in the building are allowed entry into the building. We have also alarmed some of the exterior doors with prop-door alarms. All resident halls will soon be equipped with this new system for added protection. Students are reminded to carry their ID cards with them at all times and not to prop open any doors.

How do students call Public Safety on campus if there is a problem or they need help? Can they call from off-campus?
To reach the Campus Police in the event of an emergency they should dial x4400 from any on-campus phone. If a student is calling from on campus but using a cell phone, student should call 617-989-4444. If they are calling from off campus and need police assistance they should call 911. We strongly encourage students to program the emergency number into their cell phone.

Do Public Safety Officers walk around campus? Do they drive? How often do they patrol?
Public Safety is on campus 24/7, 365 days a year. They conduct frequent patrols of all campus buildings and grounds, including exteriors and interior patrols of all residence halls.

There are a lot of other schools in the area. Do Wentworth Officers know the Officers from the other schools?
Wentworth’s Office of Public Safety has a good working relationship with other area colleges and universities campus police departments. All schools share crime and other related incidents and also work together on investigations. The officers and central dispatch, monitor the frequencies of both area colleges and the Boston Police Department.

Does Public Safety have an escort program? What does it offer?
Wentworth Public Safety provides, both Mobil and walking Safety Escorts to all areas on campus and to local MBTA stations (Green and Orange Lines). Simply call x4400 from any campus house phones or activate any call box and an officer will be dispatched to assist you.
