How to protect yourself from "Spear Phishing" or targeted attacks

Protecting yourself from attacks that appear to be legitimate or entice you with organizational specific information is a difficult new challenge. Spear phishing involves targeted attacks where the sender knows the organization (work, bank, etc.) that you are affiliated with and designs an attack strategy around that. "Obfuscated" or shortened URLs

In the age of smart mobile devices and Twitter character limits, many sites and applications offer a URL shortening service to safe space and make links more convenient. But what happens when these tool are used maliciously? A seemingly interesting topic could quickly redirect you and your browser to a malicious website and attempt to compromise your computer or device. But you can fight back. Many services allow you to add a "+" to the end of the URL and be taken to a page which displays where the URL will be redirected to, and often show how many others have been there as well.
