About The Program

Laptop Program Overview

August 6, 2014

The Wentworth Laptop Program provides all full-time students and faculty members with a laptop computer. These computers are capable of running the high-end software that is customized to meet both the academic requirements and current industry demands for each specific major. Students in the: Architecture, Design or Facilities are provided with a MacBook Pro laptop. Applied Math majors are provided with a MacBook Air.

Students in the: Civil, Construction, and Environment; Computer Science and Information Systems; Electronics and Mechanical; Humanities and Social Sciences departments are provided with a Lenovo T440p laptop. New Management students are provided with a Lenovo T440s laptop.

The Institute started the laptop program as a pilot in the fall of 2004. It was initially implemented for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in the Architecture department. In fall 2005, the program was implemented across all of the academic departments for all incoming students. By fall of 2009, all students were outfitted with a laptop. The Institute now supports both Mac and PC platforms.

The cost of the laptop program is part of your tuition. There are no additional fees, except in cases where damage which is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty has occurred to your laptop, or your laptop was lost or stolen

The choice of laptops for each major is an institutional choice. Each year, Wentworth Student Government, students, faculty, staff, the Laptop Committee, academic departments and senior leadership work together and have input into laptop models for the upcoming year. After community input and testing of laptop models, recommendations are made and models are chosen. The operating system, device type, and software are selected by each of the programs and reviewed every few years to ensure that we are supplying you with the best technology to meet your curricular needs. There are several factors that impact our technology and software choices: What the industry is using, the software required for teaching the program, technical support, and the overall budget or cost of the program. Also, to ensure that the faculty can focus on teaching and not on technical issues related to laptop problems in the classroom, every student receives the same laptop with the same software.

To ensure that the students have the most updated hardware and software, each laptop is refreshed during their junior year. At the end of their senior year, once a student graduates, they take their computer with them.

Please note: Software on the laptops is allowed to remain on the laptop at graduation. Upon graduation, Wentworth no longer supports, upgrades, or updates a graduate owned laptop hardware or software.
