Connecting to a Secondary Display

This fix will resolve the issue with connecting to a projector or external monitor.

If your computer bluescreens when it is connected to a projector, or is unable to duplicate the screen and projector, you may follow these steps to change its BIOS settings:

  1. Start up your computer.
  2. 520s: On the Lenovo loading screen, it will say to press the blue ThinkVantage button to interrupt the startup process.
  3. 530s: It will say to press the Enter key to interrupt the startup process.
  4. This leads you to the Startup Interrupt Menu. Press F1 to enter the BIOS settings.
  5. Use the arrow keys to navigate the BIOS menus. Go right to Config, then down to Display and press enter. This opens the Display menu.
  6. Navigate to Graphics Device and press Enter. This will bring up a small, blue rectangular menu. Select Discrete Graphics and press Enter.
  7. Navigate to OS Detection for NVIDIA Optimus and press Enter. Select Disabled and press Enter.
  8. Press F10 to save your changes and exit the BIOS settings. On the Setup Confirmation menu that appears, select Yes and hit Enter.
  9. Your computer will restart.
  10. Log in to Windows normally.

Windows 7

Your computer will be set at a very low screen resolution at first, with icons and images looking stretched or oversized. This will change, don’t worry!

Make sure you are connected to the internet.

On the taskbar, a Hard Drive icon will appear, with a green dot. It will show a small window saying ‘Loading Device Drivers’. You may click on the icon to show its progress, or wait until it is finished. Your screen may go blank or flash several times. Wait until it is completely finished installing all drivers. Your screen will automatically return to a higher resolution. This may take several minutes.

After ALL DRIVERS are finished installing, we recommend restarting your system and logging back into Windows normally. Your computer should now work with all projectors on campus.

Windows 8

Your screen resolution may cause icons or images to look stretched or oversized at first. If so, this will change!

Make sure you are connected to the internet.

Windows 8 does not show its drivers being installed automatically. Your screen may go blank or flash several times. If you want to see if all drivers are completely installed, enter the Control Panel, and select ‘Device Manager’. If there are listings under Other, the drivers are not finished installing. When you expand the Display option and the NVIDIA Quatro 1000M driver is listed there, and there are no drivers listed under Other, your computer is finished.

After ALL DRIVERS are finished installing, we recommend restarting your system and logging back into Windows normally. Your computer should now work with all projectors on campus.

If your computer still does not project correctly, you feel you have made an error, or do not feel comfortable changing the settings yourself, please bring your computer to the DTS Help Desk during regular hours.
