Applied Sustainability Management
Professional Certificate Program
Available only in the Fall and Spring semester
The Certificate in Applied Sustainability Management is intended for professionals who seek to gain a clear definition and real world understanding of sustainability in order to apply this knowledge to the working environment. The practice of sustainable management for projects and facilities is one of the fastest growing professions incorporating a wide array of disciplines in all industries. This certificate program will give students a competitive advantage, in all building related industries, where sustainable practices are at the forefront. Wentworth has chosen to partner with Chapman Construction/Design for the development of this curriculum. Founded in 1984, Chapman provides industry leading sustainable construction management and consulting services to forward looking corporate, education, and medical/biotech clients. This partnership was formed to develop the highest quality and most up to date instruction of real world sustainable applications.

A certificate in Applied Sustainability Management will be awarded upon successful completion of the required six courses (14 CEUs.)
Students who successfully complete this certificate are eligible for eight (8) credits towards general electives in our bachelor degree programs.

TASM100 INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY
This course sets the groundwork for the certificate program. Concepts of "Green" and "Sustainability" will be reviewed as well as true meanings and common misconceptions of these terms. Why should we construct, renovate, oversee and manage projects that are environmentally and ethically responsible. Common practices and materials will be introduced as well as a review of third party certification systems, such as LEED, currently in use in the Construction Management and Maintenance industries. Sustainable process and oversight from an interdisciplinary perspective will be studied. How the owner can ensure that their investment in sustainable practices is being protected. Subjects covered include: Building Systems and Energy Consumption; Sourcing, Procurement and Installation of Materials; Indoor Air and Environmental Quality; Project Team Roles; Rights and Responsibility; Community Impact and Public Opinion.
TASM110 FINANCIAL PLANNING AND ANALYSIS
This course covers the economic considerations of sustainable planning, construction, maintenance, and operations. Return on investment analysis, leasing, contracts, risk management and current market trends will be studied. Third party relationships, such as government and utility incentives, will also be addressed. Indoor air quality, long and short term benefits, liability, misrepresentation and concepts of Green Washing will be discussed.
TASM130 PROJECT MANAGEMENT
The study of the methods, concepts, and procedures of project management for sustainable building will be addressed. Considers team development, accountability, sequencing of events, scheduling, coordination of consultants, budgeting, contract administration, purchasing, and estimating. These considerations will be used to compare a baseline construction project to one that will be LEED certified.
This course provides a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts in sustainable practices and why a broad understanding of the economic and societal changes are valuable to all professionals. Students will research and apply concepts needed to successfully organize, monitor, communicate and develop a sustainability program. Guest speakers, case studies and field trips will be used to help further illustrate topics on Sustainability and the Environment.
