AmeriCorps Student Leaders in Service

About the Program

AmeriCorps Student Leaders In Service (SLIS), scholarships for service is a complimentary program to Community Work Study in which students connect with community agencies, campus-based service projects and service learning projects within the classroom.  This AmeriCorps program awards scholarships to students upon completion of 300, 450, 675 or 900 community service hours in one year.  Students can use this award in addition to their federal work study award or community-based co-op, earning money towards current or future college expenses. SLIS is the only program which engages college students as part-time AmeriCorps members.  It involves approximately 35 of the Massachusetts Campus Compact member campuses with a commitment to the value of service in education and to fulfilling their public trust by graduating people who are active participants in civic life. SLIS is designed to both acknowledge and advance their efforts, placing students at the core.

Alternative Spring Break

Marie Peters spent this past summer, fall and winter working to organize an Alternative Spring Break Trip to Homestead, Florida where her group worked with the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. With the help of her co-coordinator, Brian Veltri, Marie arranged for 12 students to attend this trip and worked out all of the logisitics from airfare and lodging; to food and free time activities, as well as a budget. As a Student Leader in Service, Marie was able to count these hours planning her ASB trip towards for AmeriCorps award. In addition to ASB, Marie is fulfilling her award requirements by mentoring with the Big Sister organization. "The SLIS program is a very rewarding opportunity for me; I'm able to do volunteer work such as coordinating ASB and participating in Big Sister mentoring programs in my free time and in turn by logging in the hours I spend volunteering I'm eligible for a scholarship that will help me pay for college." Habitat for Humanity

Laura Sau chose to do her co-op as a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. On a daily basis, Laura worked with groups of volunteers onsite to train and supervise them. Every day for Laura was different with new volunteers, new locations and always something new to learn.  Examples of projects she may do include demolishing vacant properties, rebuilding or continuing to build residential or other lots.
