New Student Civic Engagement Program

About the Program

The New Student Civic Engagement Program is a unique experience that combines an introduction to the Wentworth community and the local Boston community with a day of civic engagement. Incoming students receive a community introduction, and are able to connect with fellow first year students who share an interest in community service, and have the opportunity to perform a community project together before starting their first semester. NSCEP is a great way for first year students to get to know the community of Boston and Wentworth. First year students who apply and are accepted to NSCEP receive a community orientation the day after they move onto campus and participate in a day of service during Wentworth's Opening Week events.

Fall 2011 Service Days

Mission Hill Road Race

Wentworth Service

Each year, there is a 5K road race on Mission Hill.  Local residents and students in the area come to race, walk, and volunteer. Volunteers helped check in the runners and clean the race route once it was done. The schools in the area compete for the Puddingstone Pot, which is awarded to the school that brings the most volunteers.  For five years Wentworth won the Puddingstone Pot, but lost it last year to Northeastern. This year, we brought the Puddingstone Pot back to Wentworth! Volunteers did an excellent job and had a great time.

Nathan Hale Elementary School, October 30, 2010

Wentworth Service

This school is a local Roxbury school celebrating its 100th year. During the day, students were actively engaged by helping with landscaping, raking, painting, organizing classrooms, as well as countless other little projects. Below is a quote from the principal at the school:
"Saturday was absolutely awesome!!! The entire group of 22 students representing the New Student Civic Engagement Program at Wentworth were obviously engaged and committed to community service. [The Coordinators] organized an A+ day that will be remembered for a long time. When our school piloted this program a few years ago, I was confident then of its success... and I was right on," said Sandy Mitchell Woods, Principal of the Nathan Hale Elementary School. "I am looking forward to the next time you will come to Nathan Hale School. I am so-o-o proud of our community partnership."

Shawmut Springs Garden of Art, November 30, 2010

Wentworth Service

The Garden of Art is a park on Tremont street open to the public.  It has nicely painted furniture and fences to enjoy.  Volunteers raked the entire park, fixed the broken furniture and painted the tables.  This is the second time Wentworth has worked with Shawmut Spring Church at the Garden of Art, and it is a fun place to volunteer.

Charles River Conservancy, November 20, 2010

Wentworth Service

The Charles River Conservancy is a nonprofit citizens' advocacy group dedicated to the renewal of the Charles River Parklands. Volunteers spent their time helping to plant 1,000 tulip bulbs. The Charles River Conservancy plants up to 10,000 bulbs each year along the banks of the river.

Charles River, October 23 &24, 2010

Wentworth Service

The Head of the Charles is the world’s largest regatta and takes place on the Charles River.  This year, Wentworth students volunteered at the VIP tent.  The tent is a place where donors and members of the club can view the regatta and eat gourmet catering food, with the purchase of a ticket.  Volunteers helped check ticket and answer any questions people may have.
