WIT Students Finish First and Second at the Associated Schools of Construction’s Regional Construction Competitions in the Divisions of Design/Build, and Commercial Construction.
Twelve students and two faculty participated in this year’s Associated Schools of Construction’s Region I Student Competitions on November 10-12, 2009 in Fairfield, NJ. The competition consisted of two divisions; Design/Build and Commercial Construction. This competition pitted Wentworth Institute of Technology against other regional teams that have construction related programs including; Alfred State College, Central Connecticut State University, Clarkson University, Drexel University, Norwich University, Old Dominion University, Penn College, Polytechnic Institute of NY, Pratt Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, Roger Williams University, SUNY Delhi, SUNY ESF, and U of Maine.
Six students from Wentworth’s Department of Civil, Construction, and Environment’s Construction Management program competed in the Commercial Division. Team members were Ryan Higgins (BCM), Zachariah Hirschy (BCM), Manuel Hoyo (BCM), Herbert Israel (BCM), Joseph Lajoie (BCM), Patrick Sousa (BCM), and Coach Prof. Scott Sumner. The team had to develop a proposal for Construction Management Services for a $28 million Darien Police Station Building, Darien CN. The proposal had to meet the following criteria: Staffing Plan, CPM Schedule, Value Engineering, Project Approach, Cost Estimate, Quality Control Plan, Logistics and Sequencing Plan, and Safety Plan. The proposal had to be completed within 16 hours. K & E Construction Company was the sponsor and jurors. An oral presentation is also a requirement. The team was outstanding and came in first place.
Four students from WIT’s Construction Management program as well as two students from the Department of Architecture took part in the Design/Build division. The team members were Christopher Bigelow (BCM), Jessica Dubois (BARCH), Mathew Fairchild (BCM), Nicole McClellan (MARCH) William Opie (BCM), Taliah Rashada (BSM) and Coach Dr. Craig Capano. The team’s project was to develop a response to a Request for Proposals for the design and construction of a $13 million college dormitory for Southern Maine Community College, Portland ME. Pizzagalli Construction Company was the sponsor and jurors. The student team was required to develop a building design, cost estimate, construction schedule, logistics plan and respond to all points of the RFP. All of this within a 16 hour time limit. The team then presented their solutions to a panel of professionals that worked on the actual project. The team did an excellent job and finished in a close second place.
These competitions are made possible by generous donations from local construction companies, alumni, and contributions by the CM Club. |
