Rebecca Chu, BSM '11

Graduation Date: August 2011
Concentration: Technology Management
Position: Associate Business Systems Analyst
Employer: Epsilon, Wakefield, MA

Job Responsibilities: I assist the team leader with our healthcare client’s marketing initiatives. This includes setting up metadata used to track how consumers register into the program, managing user acceptance and post production testing to ensure that data passes to the database correctly. I also use the database language SQL and Unica (an online database campaign tool) to generate count reports and consumer lists for the client, agencies, and vendors.

How WIT Prepared Me for Success: I found that communication is much more important to my job than I initially thought when I first joined Epsilon. I have experienced first hand the importance of communication when different agencies work together to complete projects by a deadline. When projects at work are at an unknown stage it is usually because the next steps or follow-ups were not communicated successfully. In fact, I was prepared for such work challenges through skills I learned while enrolled in courses at WIT. For example, in my Technology Transfer course, when my team members didn't communicate effectively, this created a lack of unity and a limited understanding of the value each person contributed to the final project.

Additionally, I’ve been more exposed on how to delegate tasks in a work setting as a result of my involvement in extracurricular activities at WIT. I recognize the importance of fully understanding an assignment before I am able to delegate the task to a colleague. When I don’t understand a task that I’ve delegated it is more difficult to resolve the issue and complete the task. While I was President of WIT’s Multicultural Student Association I tried to improve my delegation skills and now I have realized how important delegation skills are in the workplace. My Wentworth experiences, both academic and extracurricular, have overall prepared me for a career and success in the real world.
