Business Management Students Visit Sam Adams Brewery with Prof. Joseph Schellings to Learn About Operations
Reported by: Megan Savage
In August 2012, Professor Joe Schellings took his Operations Management students to the Sam Adams Brewery here in Boston, MA. There, they met members of the management, marketing and operations team who shared the trials and tribulations of the brewery.
They first heard George Ward, a member of management; discuss the three-tier system manufacturers of beer are faced with, which disallows them to sell directly to the consumer. The students learned ways to cut distributing costs and how important it is to work closely with their distributors to implement business and win accounts.
Next, Jenn, a member of the marketing team, spoke about Sam Adams’ local accounts and the ingredients of the beer as well as how Sam Adams handles shipping. Safety and organizational structure were also discussed, as the brewery gives tours as well. Therefore, Jenn stated that the people hired at the brewery must be flexible and adaptable.
Lastly, Russ, a member of the operations team, talked to the Wentworth management students about the different production breweries in Ohio and Pennsylvania. All of the “ideas” are “born” at the Boston brewery, said Russ, because it is the heart of the company.
