BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Evelyn Hadden's (North Smithfield, R.I.) goal in the 69th minute of play proved to be the only goal of the game as the Wentworth women’s soccer team (4-5-1, 4-2-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) won its third consecutive game, a 1-0 triumph over Gordon (8-3-0, 5-2-0).
The first half saw both teams have opportunities, including in the 40th minute when Leopard freshman defender Megan Rogoff (Uncasville, Conn.) took a shot from 30 yards out that would take a bounce off the turf and go over the crossbar. Wentworth would hold an 8-4 advantage in shots after 45:00 of play, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Gordon would have three corner kicks in a span of 7:25, but the ball would be cleared by the Leopards. At 66:45, senior midfielder Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, Mass.) would serve a corner kick from the right side to Hadden, who would find the lower left part of the net at 66:48. The goal was the second consecutive game-winner for Hadden.
The Fighting Scots would continue to mount pressure in hopes of tying the game at 1-all, including a pair of direct kicks in the game’s final three minutes. However, the Leopards would manage to interrupt the play each time.
Freshman Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) made two saves to record her first career shutout. Gordon sophomore Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, Iowa) made four saves for the Fighting Scots..
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday. Gordon will host Colby-Sawyer, while Wentworth will travel to Nichols.
