Western Connecticut vs Wentworth (09/13/07)

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore defender Amanda Genova (New Milford, Conn.) and junior forward Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, Conn.) each scored two goals as the 13th-ranked Western Connecticut women’s soccer team (3-0-1) scored seven unanswered goals—including six in the second half—to defeat Wentworth (1-4-0) in a non-conference game played at Sweeney Field.

The host Leopards would strike first, at the 4:54 mark, when junior forward Chelsea Carron (Southbridge, Mass.) served a corner kick into the box where senior midfielder headed the ball in to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead.  That goal was the first the Colonials had given up all season.  Western Connecticut evened the score at 1-all when Nathans came in alone and flicked a shot into the lower right corner of the goal at 19:28.

Genova would tally her first of the game, coming at 48:21, when she played a deflection off of the Wentworth defense on a direct kick.  Genova would give the Colonials a 3-1 lead at 54:10 when she tallied her second of the game with a high shot that she tucked under the crossbar.  Less than two minutes later, Nathans would score her second of the game when she capitalized on a Wentworth turnover and found and open net.

At the 64:09 mark, junior midfielder Amy Corchard (Monroe, Conn.) scored her first of the season to give Western Connecticut a 5-1 lead before sophomore midfielder Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, Mass.) broke in down the left side and scored just 48 seconds later.  Freshman forward Lauren Matthews (Monroe, Conn.) rounded out the scoring when Corchard served a cross that she headed into the goal with 13:03 left in the contest.

Senior Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, Conn.) made nine saves for the Colonials.  Freshman Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.), making her first start in goal, allowed four goals and made three saves in 57:02 of work.  Sophomore Madison Watson (Overland Park, Kan.), who had played 56 minutes in the field, saw her first action in net, making four saves but allowing three goals.  For the game Wentworth Connecticut out shot Wentworth 23-16, including a decisive 15-5 margin in the second half.

Western Connecticut opens Little East play on Saturday at UMass Dartmouth.  Wentworth will try and snap a two-game losing streak Monday night when the Leopards host the Emerson Lions at 7:00 p.m.
