Henniker, NH – Wentworth Institute of Technology’s Elliott Richmond (Amherst, Mass.) would score his first career goal with .8 seconds on the clock to lead the Leopards to a 3-2 double overtime win over the New England College Pilgrims Saturday afternoon in Henniker. The win improves Wentworth to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC.) The heartbreaking loss drops the Pilgrims to 4-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in TCCC.
The two teams would play through much of the opening half evenly before NEC’s Jordan Colonese (Guilford, Conn.) would get the Pilgrims on the board scoring the lone goal of the half off a nice pass from Drew Warwick (Exeter, N.H.) at the 32:31 mark.
Colonese would put the Pilgrims up 2-0 early in the second half heading in a ball from Nick Manocchio (Chepachet, R.I.) Wentworth would answer with Kyle Nasman (Lenox, Mass.) scoring off a free kick from Joe Carroll (Lebanon, Conn.) at the 70:55 mark to cut the lead to one. The Pilgrims would have several opportunities late but it was Wentworth who would convert on another free kick with Dave Fustino (Meriden, Conn.) scoring off a deflection with four minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. The goal was Fustino's first collegiate tally.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless first overtime and an almost identical second overtime before Richmond would sneak a shot by NEC keeper Nick Kropelin (Jeffersonville, Vt.) with under a second remaining to walk away with the 3-2 victory.
Picking up the win in goal for Wentworth was Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.) who finished with five saves. In goal for NEC was Nick Kropelin who finished with four saves.
New England College will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 27 when they host conference opponent Curry College at 4:00 p.m. Wentworth will return to the field on Monday, Sept. 24 when they host conference opponent Curry College at 7:00 p.m.
