BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attackman Cory Benbulis (Victor, N.Y.) scored four times and assisted on two others as the Wentworth lacrosse team (4-2, 3-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) won its fourth straight game, an 11-7 triumph over Curry (4-4, 1-3) in a TCCC contest played at Sweeney Field.
With 11:44 left in the opening period, Wentworth got on the board first as sophomore midfielder Joe Harding (Dedham, Mass.) scored off a rebound of a Benulis shot. The lead would stand until 6:53 left when freshman midfielder Paul Marchese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored on a feed from freshman midfielder Michael D’Amato (Redding, Conn.). The Colonels took a 2-1 lead 33 seconds later on an unassisted tally from sophomore midfielder Rob Gardner (North Quincy, Mass.).
Trailing 2-1 entering the second quarter, the Leopards scored three times, with Benulis scoring a pair of goals and freshman Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) adding one to give Wentworth a 4-2 lead at the break. Wentworth held a 21-3 shot advantage over the second 15 minutes of play.
Curry opened the third quarter with a goal from senior attackman Ryan Rooney (West Newton, Mass.), assisted by D’Amato, to cut the lead to 4-3. Biszko would score to give the Leopards another two-goal lead, but Rooney scored a shorthanded goal with 7:54 left to trim the lead back to one. Benulis would score two goals in a 37-second span to give Wentworth a 7-4 lead before Rooney’s second of the game, a man-up marker, cut the lead to 7-5 after three quarters.
Gardner and Rooney opened the forth quarter by scoring goals within 32 seconds of each other to tie the game at 7-all. However, junior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) scored on a feed from senior midfielder Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) to give the Leopards the lead for good at 8-7 with 7:36 left. Rupert, Harding, and sophomore defenseman Jeff Ryan each scored man-up goals in the final six minutes of play to add insurance goals and account for the final margin of 11-7.
Harding finished the night with two goals and an assist, while Rupert also added three points, coming on a goal and two assists. Wesche collected a game-high seven ground balls and won seven of 15 face-offs. Rooney led Curry with four goals, while Marchese and freshman midfielder Kyle Abbott (Ashland, Mass.) each won six face-offs to help the Colonels hold a 12-10 face-off advantage. Marchese also picked up six ground balls.
Senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 12 saves in 59:24 of work. Sophomore Sean Tobin made one save in the final 36 seconds. Curry senior Alex MacMillan (Framingham, Mass.) made 22 saves for the Colonels, who were outshot 57-28.
Both teams step out of league play on Thursday. Curry travels to Mitchell for a 4:00 face-off against the Pequots, while that evening, Wentworth entertains MIT at 7:00 p.m.
