BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attackman Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) scored four goals, while fellow classmate Cory Benulis (Victor, N.Y.) tallied twice and assisted on four goals—three of which were scored by Biszko—as the Wentworth lacrosse team won its third consecutive game, holding off a late charge by Salve Regina, 9-8.
The Seahawks would get on the board first as senior midfielder Robert Hoffman (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Brandt Nelson (Shelburne, Vt.) 32 seconds into the contest. Salve Regina held a 1-0 lead until senior midfielder Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) fed classmate Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) for the tying goal with 11:47 left.
Despite both teams having many chances to take the lead, the remainder of the first half would see neither team scoring a goal. The Leopards’ best chance came just before the horn sounded to end the half, but sophomore defenseman Jeff Ryan’s (Shrewsbury, Mass.) shot was saved by Seahawk junior goalie Brian Walker (Marshfield, Mass.).
Just 17 seconds into the second half Wentworth would take a 2-1 lead on an unassisted tally from Benulis. Biszko and freshman attackman Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) pushed the lead to 4-1 by scoring with 12:12 and 11:10 left in the period, respectively. Salve Regina stopped the run when Hoffman scored his second of the game, but Biszko would score three goals—all of which were assisted by Benulis—in a 3:05 span to extend the lead to 7-2. Nelson and junior attackman Ryan Comerford (Merrimack, N.H.) scored 1:28 apart to cut the lead to 7-4 before Rupert scored the seventh Leopard goal of the period with 55 seconds left.
Wentworth junior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) controlled the opening face-off of the fourth quarter and would feed Benulis eight seconds in to give the Leopards a 9-4 lead. Less than a minute later Comerford scored a man-up tally, closing the gap to 9-5. Freshman midfielder Chris Hoffman (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) netted his first of the year with 11:59 left, pulling the Seahawks to within three goals.
Nelson would provide an unassisted goal with 8:11 left, which extended Salve Regina’s run and trimmed the Leopard lead even more. A minute and 26 seconds later, Robert Hoffman scored his third of the game which would make it a one-goal game at 9-8.
Wentworth had a man-up opportunity with 4:06 remaining, but could only muster one shot as the Seahawk defense forced a pair of turnovers during the one-minute stretch. With 1:38 left, Nelson took a shot from in front of the net that senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made a save to preserve the lead on. However, the Leopards failed to successfully clear the ball from their end. On Salve Regina’s next possession the Seahawks would give the ball back to Wentworth with 1:00 left. After a time out, Comerford would force a turnover and collect the resulting ground ball. With 34 seconds left, he took a shot that would go wide of the Wentworth cage and was picked up by Ryan, who successfully cleared the play and kept the ball in the Seahawk end for the remainder of the game.
Murphy finished the game with 11 saves, while Walker stopped 22 shots. Wentworth held a 42-33 shot advantage on the day. The Leopards also won 13 of 21 face-offs, with Wesche, who collected a game-high 13 ground balls, winning eight of 13 and sophomore Joe Harding (Dedham, Mass.) winning five of seven.
Wentworth’s win snaps a five-game losing streak against Salve Regina and the Leopards improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play, while the Seahawks fall to 2-4 (1-1). Both teams are in action on Tuesday. Wentworth continues TCCC play by hosting Curry at 7:00 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Lasell in a non-conference matchup at 3:00.
