PAXTON, Mass. – Six different players scored in double figures, including sophomores Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) and Meaghan Gardner (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, as the Wentworth women’s basketball team (10-11, 3-6 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) eclipsed the 10-win plateau for a school-record fifth consecutive season with a 91-57 win over Anna Maria (1-20, 0-9).
The Leopards jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, thanks to four points from Coffey and three from Gardner. The hosts would trim the lead to a pair (8-6) with 17:03 to play before Wentworth took command with a 19-5 run and never looked back, taking a 25-point lead into the locker room. The Leopards shot 42.9 percent from the floor over the first 20:00, while holding the AmCats to 25 percent.
Anna Maria would score the first five points of the second half to cut the lead down to 20, but a 20-5 Leopard run, started by a three pointer from Gardner, increased the lead to 35 points and sealed the win for Wentworth.
Gardner finished the afternoon perfect from the floor (4-for-4), while sophomore guard Angela Tucker (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) each added 10 points for the Leopards, with Vallone also adding nine rebounds, two blocks, and four steals. Senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) and freshman forward Meaghan Healey (Merrimack, N.H.) each recorded double-doubles for Wentworth, with Cring scoring 10 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and blocking four shots, while Healey had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The 91 points were the most points scored since Wentworth scored 93 in a 93-13 win over Fisher on Nov. 21, 2003.
Anna Maria sophomore Juliana Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) led all scorers, as she connected on 11-of-23 shots for 33 points to go along with grabbing 11 caroms.
With four conference games to play, the Leopards presently sit two games out of the eighth and final TCCC playoff spot. Wentworth hosts Nichols Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. That same day the AmCats are at Roger Williams.
