NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) scored 15 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 67-56 overtime victory against Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s basketball action Thursday.
After struggling from the free throw line throughout regulation, Wentworth (9-9, 2-4 TCCC) heated up in overtime. The Leopards were 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the extra session after shooting 8-for-18 in regulation. The success at the line helped Wentworth outscore Salve Regina (9-8, 3-3 TCCC) 15-4 in overtime.
Wentworth trailed 46-36 with 8:16 remaining in regulation, but a 12-2 run over the next 3:49 tied the game. Sophomore Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) had five points during the run, including a made free throw following a technical foul on the Salve Regina bench with 4:27 to go.
There were three lead changes in the final minutes, and Wentworth was up 52-51 on a free throw by senior Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.), who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Salve Regina senior Allison Moen (Yonkers, N.Y.) made one of two free throws with four seconds left to tie the score and set up overtime.
In the extra session, Salve Regina held a 54-52 lead before Coffey gave the Leopards the lead for good with a three pointer with 3:08 left. The Seahawks would cut the lead to 57-67 with 2:19 left, but four consecutive points by Vallone extended the lead to five with just over a minute to play. Wentworth held Salve Regina to 1-for-11 shooting from the floor in overtime.
For the game, Salve Regina was just 11-for-25 (44 percent) from the free throw line. Entering the game, the Seahawks had been shooting 70.8 percent from the line as a team.
Junior Allegra Lovoy (Charlestown, R.I.) led Salve Regina with 14 points and five assists. Moen added 12 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots. In addition to Vallone’s offensive performance, the Leopards got 14 points, nine rebound, and five steals from Cring and 13 points from Coffey.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday, as Salve Regina hosts New England College and Wentworth, which snapped a four-game losing streak, plays host Regis College. Both games commence at 1:00 p.m.
