BOSTON, Mass. - Senior forward Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) shot 8-for-13 from the floor, en route to a game-high 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals as Bates held Wentworth to 25 percent shooting from the floor and took a 73-46, non-league victory at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Bobcats jumped out to an 8-2 lead three minutes into the contest, thanks in part to four points from Coffin. The Leopards used an 8-0 run over the next 3:47 to take their only lead of the game, 10-8. Sophomore forward Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) had a basket, while senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Meaghan Gardner each hit three pointers.
Bates tied the game on a lay-up from freshman forward Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) on the next possession and used that to begin a scoring spurt of 16-4 and took a 24-14 lead with 5:57 left in the half. Wentworth would trim the lead to seven on a three pointer by sophomore guard Angela Tucker (Lynn, Mass.), but a 12-0 run over the final 4:29 of the half put the Bobcats up by 19 (36-17) after 20 minutes of play.
The first half saw the hosts shoot just 20.7 (6-for-29) from the floor and commit 15 turnovers. The Bobcats took full advantage, scoring 12 points off of those miscues and would also outscore the Leopards 26-0 in the paint.
Bates opened the second half the same way it ended the first half as the Bobcats went on a 15-2 run, which put them up by a 51-19 score with 14:40 left to play. Wentworth’s shooting woes would continue in the second half, as the Leopards shot 30.4 percent while allowing the Bobcats to connect on 53.1 percent of their shots.
In addition to Coffin, junior forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) scored 14 points and had four assists and four steals. Senior guard Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) dished out nine assists in the winning effort.
For Wentworth, Cring and Gardner each scored 10 points to pace the Leopards. Cring also added 10 rebounds on the night.
With the win Bates snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 11-6 on the year. The Bobcats return to NESCAC play Friday night at Wesleyan. Wentworth dropped its third consecutive game and falls to 8-9 on the season. The Leopards return to TCCC play Saturday afternoon against Regis.
