WENHAM, Mass. - Freshman guard Sara Schwanke (Duxbury, Mass.) netted a game-high 15 points including 13 free-throws as Gordon defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 54-50, to snap a nine game losing streak in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play this afternoon in.
In each team’s TCCC opener, the Leopards (7-5, 0-1) surged out of the gate taking an 8-0 lead on a three pointer from sophomore guard Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) with 17:23 remaining in the opening period. Schwanke put ths Scots on the board with a pair of free-throws as the Scots (2-10, 1-0) began to find a rhythm on offense while the Leopards could not buy a bucket despite many open chances. Gordon cut the lead to four, 12-8, as junior forward Erin Thames (River Vale, N.J.) drained a lay-up and sophomore guard Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, N.J.) hit a three to make it a one point contest, 12-11, halfway through the first period.
With 7:22 to play, the Leopards took a five point lead, 16-11, as senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) completed a three-point play. A 6-0 run for the Scots, capped by a lay-up from sophomore forward Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) gave the home team its first lead of the contest, 17-16, with 5:21 to go in the opening stanza. Following a jumper from Wentworth freshman forward Sam Vinciguerra (Somersworth, N.H.) to make it a 21-21 game, the Scots closed out the period on a 9-4 run to make it a 30-25 lead at the break in favor of Gordon.
Wentworth struggled in the first half, shooting just 26.7 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from long range while the Scots had their best shooting half of the year as they sunk 41.7 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-low nine times in the opening stanza.
An evenly matched affair in the second half saw the score 39-33 in favor of the home team before the Leopards ripped off a 12-0, including back-to-back jumpers from junior guard Margo Ward (Mystic, Conn.) to give themselves a 45-39 cushion with 9:49 to play.
Gordon inched its way back into the game as sophomore guard Bridget O’Hara (West Newbury, Mass.) knotted the game at 47 apiece with 6:11 to go. With 1:51 to play Schwanke went to the line and tied the game at 50-50 and hit three more free-throws down the stretch to secure the victory for the Fighting Scots 54-50.
Despite shooting just 1-of-7 from the field, Schwanke was nearly flawless from the free-throw line knocking down 13-of-14. Thames added ten points for the Scots while adding nine boards. Cring led all players with 13 rebounds including eight on the offensive end while chipping in ten points as Coffey added 14 points in defeat.
The Fighting Scots will entertain Anna Maria College in a TCCC tilt at 6:00 p.m. in the Bennett Center on Tuesday (Jan. 15). That same night the Leopards host Eastern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
