BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Emily Cring’s 21 points, 21 rebounds, and five blocks paced four double-figure scorers as the Wentworth women’s basketball team (6-2) won its third consecutive game by defeating Suffolk (3-4), 78-63, in a non-league contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
After Rams’ senior forward Stephanie Morrissey (Abington, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws to put Suffolk up 4-3, 2:29 into the contest, the Leopards went on an 18-6 run to take the lead for good and lead 21-10. During the run, sophomore guard Angela Tucker (Lynn, Mass.) had nine points—all coming via three-pointers. Suffolk would use a 10-2 run of its own to pull within three (23-20) with 7:23 left, thanks to four points apiece from senior guard Katie Castignetti (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore forward Stephanie Zito (Guilford, Conn.).
A three-pointer by freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) pushed Wentworth’s lead back to six, and started a 17-2 run over the next 5:05 to give the Leopards their largest lead of the half at 40-22. Tucker would have eight points during the run, while Vallone chipped in with five. Wentworth, behind 17 points from Tucker and a 53.3 percent shooting performance from behind the arc, would take a 42-26 lead into the locker room.
The second half would see more of the same, with Wentworth maintaining a double-digit lead that did not go below 11. Cring had 19 points and 15 rebounds over the final 20:00, while the Leopard defense held Suffolk to under 30 percent shooting from the floor.
In addition to Cring, Tucker finished the game with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Vallone tallied 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had a pair of steals, while sophomore guard Michelle Fauci (Boxford, Mass.) had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.
For Suffolk, Morrissey went 8-for-16 from the floor to finish with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Castignetti was the only other player in double figures for the Rams, as she netted 12 points off the bench.
