Curry vs Wentworth (02/16/08 at Boston, Mass. (Tansey Gymnasium))

BOSTON, Mass. – Leading by 15 points with just under six minutes remaining, the Curry men’s basketball team saw its lead get trimmed to one with just over a minute to play, but held on to defeat Wentworth, 69-64, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Leopards (12-10, 6-5) took an early 11-6 lead with junior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) providing five points during the opening 5:32.  The Colonels responded with an 8-2 run with senior forward Marvin Lamarre (Hyde Park, Mass.) providing four of the points and led 11-10 with 12:54 left in the half.

A 15-3 run, buoyed by eight points from junior guard Brad Bryant (Livermore, Maine) and five from Doyle, gave Wentworth its largest lead of 11 (26-15) with 4:21 left.  Curry then used a 10-2 run, with four points coming from senior forward Johnathan Bowers (Comstock, Mich.) to trim the lead to three (28-25) with 43 seconds left before a Bryant three pointer with five ticks left gave Wentworth a 31-25 lead at the break.

The two teams traded baskets to open the second half before Leopard junior forward Wenoard Bynes (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave Wentworth a 35-27 lead with 17:44 left.  However, Curry, which held the Leopards to 26.7 percent shooting in the second half, would outscore Wentworth 33-10 over the next 11:52 and led by 15 (60-45) with 5:52 to play.  Senior guard Tim Jones (Brokkline, Mass.) had 13 of his team’s 33 points during that stretch, including a pull up three pointer that put the Colonels up 15.

Wentworth began to chip away, using an 8-0 run—with four points coming from Bynes—to trail by seven (60-53) with 3:58 left.  Jones would convert a layup on a fast break to push the lead back to nine before The Leopards used a 9-1 run, capped off by a Bryant trifecta with 1:04 remaining.

Leading by one with 56 seconds left, Curry committed a turnover, giving Wentworth the ball back with a chance to take its first lead since the 13:38 mark.  However, with 30 ticks remaining, the Leopards committed a turnover.  On the ensuing possession, sophomore guard Mark Mastrullo (Billerica, Mass.) sank two free throws to put Curry up three.  A missed jump shot by senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue was rebounded by Bowers, and, after he was fouled, he sank both of his free throws, giving the Colonels a five-point edge with 10 seconds left.  Wentworth cut the lead to three on a Bynes tip-in, but Jones hit two free throws with two seconds left to make the final margin five.

Jones led all scorers with 20 points, while Bowers chipped in with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Lamarre added a dozen points for the Colonels to go along with five steals.  Doyle tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Leopards, while Bryant scored 16 and grabbed nine rebounds.  Bynes added 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

Despite shooting less than 30 percent for the game, Wentworth held a decisive, 53-37 advantage on the glass, including having 28 offensive rebounds.

Winners of six straight, Curry hosts Roger Williams Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.  That same night, Wentworth, which has dropped two straight, hosts Colby-Sawyer.
