BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) connected on 9-of-16 shots, en route to a game-high 20 points, while sophomore forward Shane West (Saco, Maine) grabbed 21 rebounds as Wentworth (10-7, 4-3 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) rolled to an 85-64 win over Regis (8-12, 2-6 TCCC) in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in a TCCC contest at Tansey Gymnasium.
The first 12 minutes of the first half saw both teams exchanging baskets, with neither team leading by more than four points at any stage. With the Leopards leading by one (29-28) with 7:25 left in the half, the Leopards began a 12-4 run that would see them take a nine-point (41-32) lead. During the run, junior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) and West each had five points. The Pride got a basket from sophomore forward Jessie Vega (Pawtucket, R.I.) to cut the lead to 41-34, which was how the first 20:00 of action of would end. In the first half, each team committed just three turnovers, with Wentworth holding a 25-15 rebounding advantage. Fifteen of those rebounds belonged to West.
The Leopards would up their lead to 10 when Doyle buried a trifecta with 18:26 remaining before the Pride began to chip away and would narrow the lead to four (56-52) with 12:29 left when freshman guard Herb Lozano (Boston, Mass.) hit a three pointer. Prezzie-Blue then made a layup off his original missed shot, but could not convert the three-point play. However, West grabbed the rebound and scored on the putback, giving Wentworth a 60-52 lead. On Wentworth’s next possession, Prezzie-Blue drained a three pointer, giving Wentworth a 63-52 lead with 11:02 to play.
Wentworth would increase its lead to as much as 18 before Regis made a charge, cutting the lead to 12 with 5:05 left. However, the Leopards got five of the next six points they scored from sophomore forward Matt Abbott (Falmouth, Mass.) and brought the lead back to 18.
Five players would score in double figures for the Leopards. In addition to Prezzie-Blue, Abbott added 12, senior guard Ed Bolton (Silver Spring, Md.) and Doyle each netted 11, and West scored 10, as well as dishing out six assists. Wentworth held a commanding 51-26 margin on the glass.
For Regis, freshman forward Phil Alibrandi (York, Maine) scored a team-high 17 points, while Lozano and freshman forward Jimmy Irmiter (Chicago, Ill.) each scored 11.
The Pride are idle until hosting Endicott next Saturday. Wentworth continues TCCC play Wednesday evening when the Leopards host the University of New England.
