Eastern Nazarene vs Wentworth (01/15/08 at Boston, Mass. (Tansey Gymnasium))

BOSTON, Mass. - Junior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) connected on 8-of-12 shots, en route to a game-high 20 points as the Wentworth men’s basketball team (7-5, 1-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) shot just over 50 percent (27-for-53) for the game and held Eastern Nazarene (3-10, 0-2) to 36.7 percent as the Leopards defeated the Crusaders, 72-50, in a TCCC game at Tansey Gymnasium.

The visitors came out of the gate early, taking leads of 7-2 and 14-8 within the first 8:15 of the contest.  Senior guard Jeremy Hueston (Brunswick, Md.) scored five points during this stretch, while junior guard Colby DaSilva (Bridgewater, Mass.) added four of his own.  However, the six-point margin would be Eastern Nazarene’s largest of the night as Wentworth scored the next six points, including a three pointer by junior Kevin Wentworth (Ware, Mass.), and tied the game at 14-all with 10:05 left in the half.

With the score tied at 18, the Leopards went on an 11-0 run over the next 7:30 to take an 11-point lead.  During the run Doyle would tally five points and sophomore forward Matt Abbott (Falmouth, Mass.) added four of his own, including a dunk that was set up by a junior forward Weonard Bynes (Bridgeport, Conn.) steal.  Senior forward Luc Jasmin (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a pair of jump shots around Wentworth senior Ed Bolton’s (Silver Springs, Md.) two free throws to cut the lead to 31-22, which was how the first half would end.  The Leopards would shoot 13-for-26 from the floor over the first 20:00, while Eastern Nazarene was 6-for-22 (36.4 percent), including 1-for-7 from behind the three-point arc.

Jasmin opened the second half with a basket to cut the lead to seven, but sophomore forward Shane West (Saco, Maine) and Doyle hit back-to-back shots to push the lead back to 11.  After Jasmin and West traded baskets, the Crusaders scored the next five points and found themselves trailing by six (39-33) with 15:08 to play.  Eastern Nazarene would get the lead down to five (45-40) with 10:00 left, but a 19-2 run by the Leopards gave the hosts a 64-42 lead with 5:29 left and never looked back.  During that run, senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) had 11 points.

In addition to Doyle’s 20 points, Prezzie-Blue added 15 of his own, with 11 coming in the second half, to go along woth six assists.  West had eight points and five rebounds, while Bolton chipped in with seven.  Jasmin and Hueston each scored 13 points in a losing effort for Eastern Nazarene, with Jasmin also grabbing nine caroms.

Prior to the game, which was the conference home opener for Wentworth, the 2006-07 CCC Champions were honored in a brief ceremony, which included the unfurling of the championship banner in “Championship Row.”

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19.  Eastern Nazarene looks to snap a six-game losing streak as it hosts Gordon at 3:00 p.m., while the Leopards travel to Roger Williams for a 3:00 p.m. tilt against the Hawks.
